Strange that you should mention Kirtland. No...I'm not the S/Sgt you refer to. A/1c was as high as I could go without re-upping. I was, however, stationed at Kirtland, April'56-Oct'59.
34th Air Division. Over by the East gate and next door to the 86th Fighter Squadron.
That was back when you could go 6 blocks north or south off Central Ave. and be out in the desert.

I didn't work at Kirtland until the 70's -- by then, ABQ was already being ruined by too much expansion. I haven't been back there for a while, it's probably worse now.

My favorite story from back in the day was working inside a parked B-52 in the summer sun during EMP tests. We had to close it up with me and another guy inside taking measurements, crawling around the various bays. Remember Slim Pickens in the B-52 bomb bay in Dr. Strangelove? That's where I was. We had a thermometer inside, it kind of gave up around 130. The only thing that saved us was drinking soda and the dry air. I could drink a 6 pack in one afternoon and not pee once.

Then there was the time the angry AF Sgt. came into an AWACS we were testing and pointed a loaded gun in my face. That hole in the end sure looks big from that direction!
