If you had a trip to the Big Island right now would you go? I am not sure I would. I would love to see the lava flows but the Mt St Helens videos would keep playing in my mind

So does anyone have any advice or connections on island hopping and back country trails? I definetly want to check out the Live lava volcanoe's I believe are on the south end of Hawaii. Don't bring back any lava rocks you pick up or you will be struck by "Madame Pele's curse." Lava rocks can only safely be handled by resident Hawaiians, who will gladly sell you one that is not cursed.

If you get to Maui, go to the Marriott Hotel and have the buffet. It's outstanding. If you see a tall, pretty, blonde hostess in the dining room, tell her Brad said "Hello".That'll be my daughter. Her name is HollyMudge the patriarch

This trip will be Janet Jackson (Aloha bowl Feb 16) makeing up for the last time I worked with her a summer show at Glen Helen Blockbuster pavalion in Devore Ca, She had us put a 60 ton air conditioning unit on the dock and run numerous 2'tubes to and on the stage. These tubes got in the way of everything and were a big hassel. During sound check she say's turn the air off it's to cold! (not bad for a 110'x65' out door stage) and there the tubes sat unused and in the way for the remainder of the show. I most certainly will pay my respects at Pearl Harbor. I understand their trying to remove the oil/fuel from the Arizona as the tanks are beginning to leak.

Thanks for the info thus far. There are a bazillion websites on things to see and mostly resorts to stay at seems the priciest thing is getting from island to island (average is 160.00 round trip per person)so I guess I'm going to concentrate on inter Island transpo hope I can find a Cessna 172 or alike thats willing to make a deal for the week.Deffinetly one day for snorkling and if on Maui eat at the Marriot and send reguards from Mudge. My mother suggested sunrise on top of a mountain in Maui guess my father and her did it years ago.Off to do more research drawn

If you get the chance to go to Kauai - there used to be a nice way to backpack into a part of the island that couldn't be driven to. Nice beaches, but a good walk in and a good walk out to say the least.Beautiful place but it's been close to 30 years since I lived there and went to school there.Big island of Hawaii definitely has some good places to go to - especially if you like the volcanos. And above all - the Arizona Memorial and perhaps a trip in a boat around Pearl Harbor itself. Trust me when I say you will be in awe of what happened there.Good luck and enjoy yourself.

If you do the Maui Downhill on the Bicycles you will be at the top of the Crater for Sunrise. It is awesome. Then Coast down the hill through the clouds on the bikes Heaven Man!

apply generous amount of sunscreen before leaving your room every morning, and re-apply during the day. Stop at the lifeguard stand if you go to any beach, and ask about conditions and hazards of the day. Don't go off the main trails if you hike, and let someone know where you are going, and when to expect you back. Don't drink any water from any stream. If you rent a car, be very careful about speed limits; new photo-enforcement vans are everywhere, and unforgiving. Don't leave anything of value in a rental car, even "for just a few minutes". Check out the USS Missouri, AKA "Mighty Mo". Never turn your back on the ocean if you're in the water, or near the edge. Enjoy!

we went in july. went to the regular sights on oahu, pearl etc...then spent 11 days on maui. mostly on the beach but we did go up a mountain an hour before sunrise....it was great seeing the sun come up thru the clouds. wonderful sight but remember to dress warm as its only about 40 degrees in the morning on the mountain. also sunsets on the beach are excellant.

Take a jacket that is waterproof for the rainy side of Hawaii (Hilo & The Volcano and for use on top of the Crater at Maui. The rest of the stuff you will need is totally casual (Shorts, sandals, Tennis Shoes, hardly anyone dresses up in Hawaii, even in the upscale restaurants) Don't forget to paraSail at Kona on the Stratosphere 800 ft high and they let you free-fall to about 30ft. above the water and then take off again and launch you into the wild blue yonder. They also rent Harleys and Sport Bikes there. You can even Rent a Cobra Kit Car for about 300.00/day...
