Hey Oto, sounds like it should rip pretty good. I have one question, what does he mean taken out to 383? The SBC 383 is a 350 bored .30 and a machined 400 crank. The 383 is a combination of bore and stroke.

As far as the blower, I always wanted a blower motor but I'm too chicken to run one and NHRA rules makes you put ugly * straps on them in case they go POOF.

I'm also curious about the heads, did he have to port them or gasket match them for flow or are they good out of the box? I've heard of the Dart brands but never messed with them.

A power glide huh? I didnt think those was still being used, glad to hear he has one! Those things are like hens teeth around here unless you want to shell out buku $$ for an aftermarket. I'm going to get a fuly manual TCI braket trans with a reversed valve body and a 3500rpm 10" converter for the 'bird, along with the 9" rear and the 4.56 gears I'm not going to do well on the highway but it will scream on the 1/4.

The last 383 I built was 100% Edelbrock performer, cam heads intake and carb was all of the performer brand. It run good but wasnt really a drag racer. In a '77 Camaro with 373 rears it ran 13.70 in the quarter. Some of the factory cars can do that. This is my first shot at an all out radical race engine and the further along I get with it the crazier I'm gettin. I just picked out a 10 pt cage for the car, weld in of course and frame rails. I'm also thinking about 36" tubs and moving the frame rails in. What started out as just an engine hop up to play with is turning into and all out pro street. It's going to take me into next year and about another $5 if I do all the work myself, but that is what makes it worth it. Why brag about someone elses work like Mike does with his 11 sec stang, doing it yourself is far more gratifying. Mike has proven anybody can go fast with money, I'm going to spend a little more than he did for his engine on my ENTIRE CAR and I'm going to have a tubbed and caged pro street!

And as far as your buddy getting into the tens with his, I hope to hell mine gets there! NOS also has Fogger systems that are rated out to 750 horse, now their idea of 750 is more like 350 in dyno horse but I'm thinking about getting it. Run the 750 kit with the dual stage progressive switching and maybe just maybe I can get into the 9's! Bad thing about the 9's is if your car runs faster than 9.999 you need to get an NHRA drag racing license to run it on a NHRA track. You have to take a physical and make three safe passes under 9.999 off of a pro tree to get it. I dont know if you ever tried a pro tree but it's hard as hell for me to get a good hole shot off of it.

Tell your buddy he has a runner and I hope my backyard hot rod can keep up with it, I don't know where you guys live but If you get around PA much stop in at the Super Chevy show in Carlise this summer, I'm goin parts huntin there.

7mm I thought you were sound asleep didn't hear a thing from you last night. We are in Wichita Kansas my buds big dream it to take a car on the "POWER TOUR" from coast to coast but it seems to radical to me to do that...He calls the guys that run nitros "Woosie Juice" because they can't build a motor to compete without it..I asked him why he didn't start with 350 and bore and stroke it to 383 and he explained there is a difference in the way the opposing cylinders are on the 350 and the 400 small block and this way it makes a better motor. I have never run on a real drag strip in my life but did a bunch of street racing when I was younger so the light deal I can't tell you about. He had to get a professional appraisal on the car before they would insure it and it appraised for 35K...Just think one of these weekends maybe he will take me on a run through Backyard burgers where all of the hot dogs congregate on Frodaynight. But I will have to make him promise he won't get on it I don't think old pappy's heart will take it any more. The fastest thing I have ever been on was a buddys Harley Davidson Drag Bike I took her down my street when I lived in town and when I came back my wife was histerical, bawling and everything I used to drink a lot of beer and it shure makes you dumb..."Beer Muscles",you know what I am talking about.

I know all about beer muscles, I got the crooked teeth and crooked nose to prove it.

Wussie juice?!?! Whats he call that blower? Dat motor aint normally asperted now is it!?!?! It's ok for him to cheat right?

This one I'm building according to the tech guys who helped me match the parts I needed tell me I should be around 525 hp and 525 ftlbs of torque, add another 350 in nitro, this thing should rock! If he's curious I can email you the engine specs and you can give them to him to see if I'm gonna be close to my expected hp.

Ohh and ask him why the Top fuelers and pro stock huys run nitrous on their cars?

Using the 400 block was probably because of the siamesed cyls, problem I see is he would have to run block filler because of strength problems.

That tour he is talking about would be fun but I never have the time for something like that, I'm lucky to get to go down to the drag strip that is 60 miles from here. I wanted to go down last weekend but wifeys friend needed a head gasket on her Ford Escort, I was ashamed to have that thing in my driveway.

I wasnt able to get on since Sunday nite, I was a good boy and drove a friends truck for a couple days so he could have some time off, anything for a buck huh?

7mm, just a point of clarification, Top Fuel cars run Nitromethane fuel, not nitrous oxide. Also, Pro Stock cars are prohibited from running nitrous oxide as well. They are required to run race gasoline, and it has gotten to the point that they have to run the fuel that is provided to them at the track to prevent any monkey business with the fuel. Sounds like you are building quite a ride, as an NHRA certified type, may I offer one suggestion. Follow the rule book closely if you are going to run on an NHRA track. As an inspector, one of my least favorite duties is to inform a racer that his newly built ride doesn't meet the specs. Good luck in your efforts. If you have any questions, drop me an e-mail and I would be glad to help if I can.

Since you are an inspector you could help with with a couple thing.

How many loops do I need when running slicks?
What materials are acceptable for pressure gauges?
Is the 10 pt cage acceptable for the NHRA?
At what ET do I need a cage?
And is it still 9.999 to get a license?
If I do go 9.999 without a license can I run it if I keep it above that?
Also do I need a firesuit and at what speed it it required?

Only racing I have done has all been ETK and my fastest car was 13.70 and all I needed was a helmet. This is my first step up with the big boys.

bikrprchr, don't a lot of the big boys still run power glides today. and isn't that a chevy transmission that originated back in the mid 50''s? P.S. I like your signature, first time I saw it I had my wife come in and see it....

7mm if you send me your specs. I will have him look them over and tell you what he thinks. Maybe he could give you some pointers. His last car was a 68 camero hat was for racing only, I will find out what his best E.T. and speed was and let you know...The ladd knows how to build a motor...I think those tubbed out cars are bad looking If I ever got crazy and wanted to do anything I would want a 40 willis all tubbed out and lifted in the front like the old gassers. or a 34 ford 2 door sedan I had one that I sold about 4 years ago that had been stored in a barn since 1950 not a spec. of rust on it and all metal...Dumb Dumb Dumb......Gave the money to my daugher for a down payment on a house. Smart Smart Smart Just got tired of going to visit her in a appartment that was all run down...send me your specs
rphancock@sktc.net Oh by the way my buds next project is going to be a Harley, can't wait You probably woundn't care much for him because he is not as nuts about guns as we are....
