Living in the midwest, tornado alley, I just have to ask if any of our memebers have been in the path of the massive tornado outbreak here. We have been very lucky here. Many alerts and warnings, but so far they have all missed us by a few miles. I hope that the rest of you are as lucky. May God watch over and protect you all.

Just had returned from a weekend gun show about 9:30 pm last night.
Was unloading guns, when weather break on tv said that a tornado had been spotted---two miles from my home.
    "BIG PROBLEM"??????????
Smart thing to do--Go to basement, where wife was seeking shelter?????????
Dumb thing to do--Keep unloading guns from vehicle and take "Them" to basement.
Chose the "Dumb" route----Got them all to the safely to the basement.
"ONLY" got golf ball size hail that beat the hell out of my newly shingled roof and new aluminum gutters.
Oh Well, the guns were safe.

ysacres, I think they rate them as F1 through F5, with the latter being the most severe. We don't get near as many as they do in some states, but my family has lost one roof, one large tree and one privacy fence and picnic table (all together at two different houses) in Michigan.

I still haven't seen one, though. I'd love to!! (from about 1/2 mile away that is).

I've lived in Tornado Alley my entire life, first in North Texas, then in the Texas Panhandle, now in Central Texas. I've seen at least 20 in my time, and I have to admit they are fascinating. They're always more interesting when they're moving AWAY from you. I was caught in the storm that hit Jarrell and NW Austin in 1997 and killed around 30 people. That one was way too close for comfort. I remember looking up and seeing 3 funnel clouds drop down within about 30 seconds.

Tornadoes are rated by their wind speed, by damage surveys and Doppler radar readings. F-1 is the weakest, with F-5 being the strongest (and the one you definitely don't want to be around). The one that hit Jarrell was an F-5 and it totally wiped out an entire subdivision, scouring the pavement off the streets and leaving nothing in the area.
The one that hit Happy was an F-2.

Missouri has its fair share. A 12 year old boy was killed last week in the SouthEast part of the state. I used to live in STL and had a bad one come by at night by the airport. Lots of damage but in a small area. Now I live in NorthEast Mo. Saw my second while driving home from work a couple of years ago. The weather didn't seem that bad. No rain yet. Just looked cloudy. Dosing along as I drove on a blacktop country road and happened to glance out the right side windows. Thar she blows about a mile away. A thin translucent one that spun for about a minute and then just disapeared. Heard later that that system produced five of those little twisters. No damage. But man o man did it rain after that twister disapeared. Got real wet real quick!
Wife is absoluely paranoid of Thunderstroms and Tornadoes. She was up till 1:00am last night because of storms and we are supposed to have them for the next two nights. Not too pleasant around the home front during storm season.

    Rickstir,
Where do you live? I grew up in Palmyra, near Hannibal. Can't take the cold weather there! :)

I don't know what happened but Maryland has turned in to a mini Oklahoma. We had an F-5 not far from me and I've got to tell you it scared the * out of me! I hope it was the last one I see for a long time. RG

Even in the Northeast, we do get one now and then.

A few years ago, the town of Mechanicville got whacked pretty good by an F2.

Came right through the middle of town and picked up a big commercial air-conditioning unit off a roof and threw it through the front of a furniture warehouse down the street.

The whole area was getting socked with reeeealy heavy thunderstorms at that point, so I watched the battery powered TV in the basement for the whole night.

Beach, What part of the country are you in? I am in Kansas and we had 15 tornados touch down and were spotted in only 3 counties surrounding the Wichita Kansas area just last night. There was about 10 houses damaged or destroyed in Pratt Kansas so we were lucky OTO
