--"Americans for Gun Safety" hypocrisy.
Staffer Get Your Gun. Some Congressional staffers were surprised to receive an invite from Americans for Gun Safety to attend a gun show this weekend in Richmond, Va.The little junket begins when a chartered bus leaves Capitol Hill at 2 p.m. Friday with an on-board briefing on "Ilegal Gun Trafficking"and then the attendees will check into the swank Jefferson Hotel, site of a welcoming reception. Everyone will later head to Havana 59, a cigar-and-martini bar, for "dinner."After breakfast on Saturday the staffers will be taken for a firsthand look at how people are able to take advantage of the "gun-show loophole" by purchasing weapons without going through the normal background checks. The folks at the Violence Policy Center, an anti-gun group that thinks AGSisn't true to the cause, claims that the trip doesn't add up. "Taking into account Americans for Gun Safety's pro-gun agenda, this gun-show junket is more likely to be a bargain-hunting expedition than a fact-finding mission," said a VPC spokeswoman. One House staffer who declined AGS's invite added:"It certainly struck me as strange that a group so opposed to gun shows would take Congressional staff to a gun show. What would they do when staffers started buying guns on AGS's dime?"But Jim Kessler, AGS's policy and research director, vowed that the staffers "won't be buying any guns there" because the bus will eventually be taking everyone back to D.C., where carrying firearms is illegal."Most Congressional staff have not been to a gun show. It gives them an idea about what goes on there,"he said, noting that the experience can be downright "frightening http://www.rollcall.com/pages/columns/hoh/
