edited January 2017 in General Discussion
My Brother just purchased a Weatherby Vanguard series 2 in 7mm mag, for an upcoming Elk hunt in the Northern NM/Southern CO area. (Where he lives.)

He is mentioning a Nikon Monarch (?) and/or a Vortex as his two choices.

Both variable scopes in the 3-16/20 X 50 ish area. (Sorry I deleted his text to me, can not be more specific as to his exact choices.)

What say you Members, as to a long range scope for the above cartridge and type of hunt??

I will get him to look in on this thread. (He is EC135Pilot.) I keep telling him to come on here. [:D]

    Agreed MontanaJoe.

The more specific the better Gentlemen. I will try and get him to view the results of this discussion.

    I am also mentioning Swarovski.
(But) I am in agreement with his Vortex lean.

    Thank you in advance Members.

For the money Vortex is hard to beat. I have Leopold, Burris, Sightron and Night Force and my Vortex will do anything those others will do. Best warranty in the game, great customer service one of the best in the game.

    Thought he was still looking.

He purchased a Vortex Viper HS LR 4-16 X 50 Dead Hold BDC, first focal plane. (While purchasing the rifle.)

Average shot distance in area he will be hunting is 400 yards.

don't worry about the scope, if he's shooting at 400 yds he better be doing some practicing...

If some of the others like leupold don't do Something soon with their marketing/warranty/offerings Vortex will have put them out of business.

I use both. Leupold is going nowhere, they're not in the same class.

point taken. in that case, I have had good luck with the Leopold 4x9's. No clouding, really rugged. A lot of my hunting is after long horseback trips, so anything can happen and often does.

You will never go wrong with Burris.

Can get any combo of options, size, or dimensions for that price.

+1. No better bargain than a lifetime Vortex.

Sounds like a trip to Chama!
Hope he gets REALLY familiar with 140+gr projectiles if he wants to nail an Elk. A friend used some reloads I made him in his BAR; he was certain that the 120gr loads he read about were the cat's paws for swatting Wapiti. I showed him pics from the last 2 times I went with an Apache pal in the Jicarilla, explained the difficulty in finding a poorly-hit Bull, and suggested he either up-gun or use heavier bullets.
He had planned to use his new 10-24X50 scope, rangefinder, and shooting sticks; busted a 850 pound Bull almost immediately, but completely missed it because all he could see at 85 yards was hide. Next day, he removed the scope, left the rangefinder in the truck, and shot a wounded Bull (I think it might have been the same one) with 3 shots, using factory Federals pushing 120+/- gr Trophy bullets. It was less than 100 yards away, and trotted almost a quarter mile.
He has since switched to a Ruger 300WM.

The scope and caliber are fine. But if I was going to buy that set up, I'd have gone with a gun that had a 26" pipe to get some more FPS out of it though...

As for the Leupold/Vortex warranty thing, if you have a Leupold scope and something goes wrong with it they will fix it for free, or replace the scope if parts aren't available...

    Thanks for the reply toad67.

His Weatherby 7mm Mag is a 24" barrel.

I appreciate the replies one and all. Thank you.

Had to go back & re-read your OP, is it a 7mm WEATHERBY Magnum or that Remington version?
If it's the 7WBY; nevermind......with a 24" tube & a couple hundred extra fps he can even use "light" bullets if he does a quartering just-below-the-center shot or broadside.
Gotta recommend a teensy dab of Aqua Velva on top of boot; the tourists in the 50's used to hike over towards the critters to feed them, and the elk seem to have a generational affinity for it.
Hope he gets a nice one, & enjoys sloping terrain[:(][;)]
