camelbak hydration packs

Does anyone have any experience with these?

I have had 2 of these and i can not for the life of me get the damn things to hold water. The cap on the back where you fill them refuses to not cross thread and simply holding it upside down water pours out. I have gotten it to thread on properly 1 time. But that took 5 minutes of fiddling with the freaking thing and i spilled half the water out in the process anyway. I have even handed the pack off to other people and they couldn't get the cap to go on straight either.

Now this is 2 different packs with the same problem. They both came from a surplus type store and cost 50 bucks each.

My uncle literally puts more miles on his bike than most people do on their cars. He doesn't seem to have a problem with his.

I've been using them for years as well with no issues. As with all things, you have to be smarter than your equipment.

and how difficult is screwing a cap on right? these two packs, caps thread on nice and easy like there supposed to. tighten up nicely too. even back spin them a few times to get the threads to match up correctly. but when you give them even a gentle squeeze water comes out from under the cap.

    Two questions:

1: What cap style is it (old or new)?
2: Did you make sure the o-rings are still intact, in place and properly oiled? (Use some sort of non-toxic food oil like vegetable oil)

Not something I'd buy surplus. Carrier sure but not the bag & hose.
My guess is you have a fake.

    No problems screwing mine on.

I'm going to guess old style. I bought these around 5 or 6 years ago and never tried using them until recently.

And o rings looked good. No cracks, flexible.

That is my thought on this also drobs, that I picked up a knock off brand with a camelbak logo stitched on it.

Do yourself a favor and buy new reservoirs and drink tubes for them.

4 MS 150 bike tours and never spilled a drop.

Where did you get it? Might be a fake??

A friend gave me one he used in Iraq and Afghanistan. It doesn't have a problem getting the cap on. All I did was clean it and get a new mouth piece for it.

    Yeah.
    It shouldn't do that.
    Ever.

Sounds like a run of bad luck. I haven't had a single problem with Camelbak since buying a 100oz model when they first came on the market.

We used to use the HAWG pack for our GPS activities. Fill with water, stuff the Trimble 5400 in the main pocket with rubber ducky stickin' out; no problemmy!
Got 'em at Big 5 about 15 years ago.
Talked the salesman down to $20 a copy, and we bought 4 of 'em.
Never had a problem with leaks, but the water got hot after about 3 hours of stomping around in the desert, shooting in section corners.
Solved that problem by freezing the bag overnight; it thaws completely in about 2 hours in 100+ degree heat.

Yours might need some teflon tape around the threads, and possibly a new O-ring in the cap.
