Quick draw?

Got to practice my quick draw today, marshal Dillon still has me beat. I ran onto a rattle snake in the middle of the trail and found out two things, there is no such thing as a quick draw from a pocket holster and Hornady critical defense will make a mess of a big snake even when fired from a 2" J frame 357. I expect that will upset a lot of snake lovers but it was right close to where I was going to be working and I didn't need any poisonous vipers under foot, I'm an old man and my hearing isn't so good. Now you might say my hearing would be better if I stopped shooting rattlers in narrow rock canyons but like I said I'm an old man and set in my ways so that isn't going to happen.

I have found that .38 shot caps in a J-frame snubbie works well for rattlers & copperheads. And, it doesn't scare the horses as much.

I usually have a CCI shot shell in the pistol that I carry in the hills but I left home without it and only had my little carry gun with me. I have now corrected that situation. Even a 22 shot shell will kill a rattler right quick and would have worked better today, it only takes one pellet in their head. The hollow point nearly blew the thing in half but as it was coiled I hit it in the middle with the first shot so it would have still been able to bite.
My horse was a Honda Rancher and he never even flinched at the shot.[:)] I barely heard it myself. I guess the adrenaline had something to do with it.

With all the rain we have had this year, down in Southern Nevada, we have tons of Side Winders slithering around. The don't like to warn you with a Buzz!

I don't give them a warning to go away either.
