Here is a picture of some of the Elk Herd that we have here in Penna.
Last year was the first year that hunting elk was allowed in Pa. There were 50,000 people who applied for the 30 license's available.Of these 29 were Pa residents and one was from Vermont. Of the 30 27 took elk, with eight antlered and seven antlerless in Elk County, and six of each in Cameron County. This year 70 license's will bw issued. The Game commision estimated the Pa. Herd to be around 700 animals with an annual growth rate of 10-14 percent.
This hunt was designed to reduce the number of elk where conflicts occur with landowners and redirect their expansion into suitable areas!
The game commisions goal is to manage for a high production of large mature bulls.
They tell us that the eastern elk are a bit larger than the western elk, but not having been out west I would not know. In some areas near St Mary's Pa the elk have become quite a nuisance to property owners! I for one am glad they are here and love to take a trip down yearly to catch a glimps of them. Hopefully I will be able to take some additional photos this year. Enjoy Pa.

pabooger, I was there for the 11th Annual Mosquito Creek Sportsmans Club Coyote Hunt this past February and got to see elk 2 days. It was fun to see them!! I saw them in two different locations and neither was at the observation area. I saw 17 on Friday and 12 on Saturday. Only wish the coyotes had been that cooperative. Hope to hunt there again this coming year. Are you close to there? GHD

That IS a nice BOOOL pabooger ... See if you can shoo him up to the NY border. I sit on my back property line on opening day of Pa gun season. I'll be a waitin' for him !

Three elk waitin' to use the necessary... And we New Yorkers thought you Ridgerunners were uncivilized. Must take some real training to teach that bull how to get through the door and back out. Then again, the little house is a bit tilted.

By the way... The white tails here in Steuben and Chemung counties are only a few hundred pounds heavier than your elk. We feed corn here while you guys seem to think those emaciated excuses can live on hemlock bark.

    Nice pics. Thanks.

pabooger, I am definitly going to be up that way before long and hopefully will take part in the coyote hunt again. As far as tips on calling I'm absolutely just a beginner!!! There is a guy on here, "varmit hunter" that is one of the best in the world! He can give you some tips and direct you in the right place to start. We don't have an overabundance of them here but we do have enough to make it fun! My daughter Sarah (13) thinks it's fun to try so that makes it 200% more enjoyable!! Will let you know when I'll be that way. GHD
