Ya gots ta 'scuse this old Northern guy fer not knowing this. It's a small thing, but something I've wondered about.

Which is correct -

Yall

Y'all

Ya'll

Ya'all

I'm kinda thinking that the first and the last are most likely wrong, but what about the other two? To me, the second one that I listed just seems like it should be the correct one. Or is there another form of the contraction that I didn't list? Thanks.

Boomerang teaches "Advanced Communications" and "English 101" at the "University of Texas". He is a "Professor of Language Skills", is "Dean of the English Department" and is "Quad-Lingual" i.e., he speaks "North Texas", "East Texas", "West Texas", and "South Texas". Everyone knows that "Central Texas" is just a combination of the other four. Though too modest to flaunt his degrees, he has both a "PhD. of Southern Language Composition", and a "PhD. of Grammer, South of the Red River". We are fortunate to have him here, and very proud of his accomplishments.

    Thanks Boom, See ya'll later!

It's not proper english just a slang word.......so it really doesn't matter how you use it.....I do...yall......

In the south we can take a 100 proper word essay and say it in 60 words or less and no one from around here would think twice...

It mainly depends on what part of the South yall from. Now using DR. Booms info. Yall know were I fit. My biggest problem, Is that I am half Coonass, Born ,And rased in Texas.
A man once told me that he felt very sorry for me. When I asked why, He said "Being half coonass, The other half of you knows what you are missing". He is so right. They are the most wondefull people in the world, If they like you.

Having been born in the north, and lived in the south, the differences between the two never ceased to amaze me. Language being the most perplexing. Until I had lived there long enough to understand some "characteristics" of the southern spoken word, I very often only picked up on only half of what was said. My name is Brian, and am often called B by my closest friends. In the north, if I were hunting with a friend, he might say something like this:
" Hey B. See the itty bitty bird?"
If I were hunting in the south with a friend, he could convey the same thought using only a handful of letters and one word.
    " A B. C d e d b d bird? "
I'm not sure which would be the acceptable way of which would be correct, but I think I would have to lean toward the second of your four choices.

It's a contraction of "you all" so y'all is correct.

Thanks for the accolades, but all my degrees are from east of the Mississippi. Texacans have an entirely different dialect than true southerners.

They are all the same,it just depends on how fast or slow we speak it at the time.

Never ask why but only the value of.

I guess one could say that a "true southerner" is a descendant of anyone that lived in southern states east of the Mississippi where all the major battles were fought during the "War of Northern Aggression" Myself born in LA (lower Alabama), and now live in Tennessee.

As aside note, this appears to be my last posting as a Junior Member. From this point forward I will now hold the lofty title as Member. Wow it only took me 2 years to get here.
