Swarms of fishflies are converging on southeast Michigan. The pests are also known as mayflies.

They can stick in people's hair, and cover walls, sidewalks and lawns in some waterfront communities. In massive numbers, their crushed bodies can slicken paved roads or sidewalks.

Their hordes provide a smorgasbord for fish. Entomologists say walleye, perch and bass feed on them. They're also an important food source for birds and bats.

The development of a mayfly takes between three and five years. The eggs are laid on the water's surface and sink to the bottom where they mature. Those that aren't eaten while rising to the surface shed their skin, sprout wings and take flight. They're then driven inland by the winds whipping around the lake.

Never ask why but only the value of.

Sounds like "Locust Year" to me. Only 1 time every 17 years do we get to experience it.(Probabably a good thing since they are absolutely devastating to trees, especially fruit trees.) The fish learn real quickly to key on their wings causing the little ripples in the water. You can catch more fish than you ever thought possible with the little buggers! Bluegills, Bass, Crappie will take them off the top and the catfish will tear 'em up if they sink!! 2003 will be my 3rd time to experience "Locust Year". Hope I live to see it and take some kids fishing!!!! GHD
