In the state of kansas you are allowed to complete hunter's safety at the age of 10, drive at 16, own a rifle or shotgun at 18, anda pistol at 21. As is close to the same with all other states. But if i were to go out hunting at the age of 17 with friends or by myself, it is illegal for me to have a rifle or shotgun in my possession because i am under the age of 18. And the same goes for pistols with people under the age of 21. I am at our farm all of the time and need to carry a weapon on me, but i do not want to carry something like a rifle that will be an overload on me while i am out checking fences. My father purchased a colt anaconda for me today but i can not legally carry the pistol for another year. I would lioke to know what i can do if anything, if not, what is the reasoning behind all of this. Like someone said earlier. Far more people are killed by cars per year than guns, except warring years.songdog

I think that within your property you can carry a cannon and police can't do anything about it,the problem is if you put one foot outside your property fence you are fried !

I think Judge Dread is right, but giving legal advise is a touchy thing. Check with (better yet, have dad do it)your local authorities

It is a strange and different world today. When I was your age, and younger, it was nothing to load up .22 rifles, shotguns, and a pistol or two in my car, and go out shooting at the river bottoms with some buddies. Our parents were aware of what we were doing. Some trips were on property owned by my dad, but more often, we were on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River on (I suppose) publicly held land.We were even contacted by the cops who wanted to see what we were up to, and finding we were doing no harm, left us to our fun.

My opinion is that a minor can carry a firearm on his own property with his parent'spermission. But there is also probably a requirement that he be directly supervised by a parent if he is carrying it on his own property, I'm not sure.

Actually, according to Federal law, a minor can be provided a handgun "as a gift" if he/she:1) Uses it for only target shooting or herd protection (?)2) Carries a note at all times giving him permission to carry, signed by his parentsBut that's just the Federal law. Its the State Laws that make any sort of "use" including holding the handgun minimum 21 years of age.

You might want to spend a few $ or so for a legal opinion. Talk to a lawyer. Even the answer you get from local law enforcement can vary from officer to officer. On a related note - I know that in my home state (PA), you did/do not need a license to operate a motor vehicle on your own property. Lots of 14 and 15 year old kids driving tractors and pick up trucks. Don't know if the same logic applies re: handguns in your instance.

Not to be a smarty but why do you need to carry a weapon? Think about it.

I think you are ok:It shall be a defense to a prosecution of criminal possession of a firearm by a juvenile if such person less than 18 years of age was: (1) In attendance at a hunter's safety course or a firearms safety course; (2) engaging in practice in the use of such firearm or target shooting at an established range authorized by the governing body of the jurisdiction in which such range is located; (3) engaging in an organized competition involving the use of such firearm, or participating in or practicing for a performance by an organization exempt from federal income tax pursuant to section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code of 1986 which uses firearms as a part of such performance; (4) hunting or trapping pursuant to a valid license issued to such person pursuant to article 9 of chapter 32 of the Kansas Statutes Annotated and amendments thereto; (5) traveling with any such firearm in such person's possession being unloaded to or from any activity described in paragraphs (1) through (4), only if such firearm is secured, unloaded and outside the immediate access of such person; (6) on real property under the control of such person's parent, legal guardian or grandparent and who has the permission of such parent, legal guardian or grandparent to possess such firearm; or (7) at such person's residence and who, with the permission of such person's parent or legal guardian, possesses such firearm for the purpose of exercising the rights contained in K.S.A. 21-3211, 21-3212 or 21-3213 and amendments thereto. (d) This section shall be part of and supplemental to the Kansas criminal code
