bore butter

I was picking up some muzzleloading supplies the other day (after I picked up my new bow) and noticed that Bore Butter now comes in Pine scent. Is this the first year that they've been making Pine scented Bore butter? This is my first try at muzzleloading so I've never smelled the old formula. Did it smell so bad that they had to mask it with Pine scent?

THere is a product out on the arket that is used for black powder rifles to preserve the barrel due to the acidic levels and corrosion that the powder causes to the barrel. During the off season when the large rifles are not shot weekly or so, what do yall think about using bore butter on the inside of the barrel to keep it at its best possible condition?songdog

My muzzleloader guy, tells me NOT to use it. He told me that the only thing you should ever put in your barrel, or on your gun for that matter,is regular kitchen soap and WD40. I am sure others will dispute this(I have heard about the evils of WD40 many times on this board),but that is what I do.

butter goes on bread, not on guns...

songdog, I'm still repaying you, here is some more advice. I've been shooting the same muzzle loader, a Traditions percussion kit I put together, and am very happy with, for the past 12 yrs. It came with a full choked 12ga shotgun bbl. also. Great gun. Its very accurate. I tick off the guys down at the muzzle loading club every once in a while when I go down and compete. That being said, I have been cleaning my gun with Thompson Center products(Number 13 Bore Cleaner) and using their Natural Lube 1000(Bore Butter) for the entire time, to both lube my round ball patches, and protect and preserve my barrel inside and out. I do not have any complaints with it, it is very effective for both of those applications. I do not know why some of the other shooters recomend you dont use it for storage application, but I do know it does work for me. Your decision buddy.

I know of a gunsmith who unscrewed the barrel from the receiver of his muzzler, degreased both pieces, soaked them with Bore Butter and baked them,..to season them.Since them,he hasn`t,in any way, cleaned them in over 200 rounds..218[This message has been edited by 218Beekeep (edited 01-08-2002).]

Songdog -For some more information, try going here - www.mamaflinter.tripod.com/beginningguidetomuzzleloaders/ Or you can contact Mamaflinter directly at -Donna@womenhunters.comTell her that Clem sent ya.She has very strong views (and a lot of experience) on this subject. That being said, I have been using Bore Butter since it came out and am satisfied with it. I store my Hawkens in a silicone treated "gun-e-sack" and have had no problems with long term storage.Edit -Just tried my link; didn't work, don't know why not.Trying again on the link, lets see if it works.[This message has been edited by .280 freak (edited 01-08-2002).][This message has been edited by .280 freak (edited 01-08-2002).][This message has been edited by .280 freak (edited 01-08-2002).]

Thanks for all of the replies once again. I thought that i would listen to every one else's screw ups before i tried it. have never used it except for my blackpowder, I think that it works well. The only problem that i have is when i do not get it ALL copletely cleaned off of the barre before i go deer hunting. They can smell that crap for miles. Especially in some of these kansas winds. Thanks once again.songdog
