Since leg hold traps were banned in my state the coyote population has skyrocketed. How does a person get started in varmint hunting. Is one of those tape recorded electric callers any good.

The coyote population has exploded here in central wash. also. the biggest problem is not how to get them it is getting permission from the land owners to be able to shoot..Most think that they are really cute while they are eating the mice and voles in the fields. And I have to admit that they are fun to watch. (thru a scope that is)

Right before they go SPLAT. Try to find some one who owns a large cattle operation. Most likely they will let you hunt when cattle start calving. That is what I do.

Here in Kansas, well in southeast Kansas it is perfectly acceptable by most landowners to drive around and shoot coyotes. It is stated in the Fish and Game rules not to do this, but most farmers are happy if you tell them you shot some coyotes of their field or whatever, as long as you are safe. Some may think this is not acceptable but ever since i was a little kid i can remember my father loading me up in the truck and riding around looking for coyotes with his 788 .223. Today i still do this with a 788 .223. Like it or not im sorry and thats the way we do things. I dont feal like this is un sportsman like do to the debrivation(sp?)factor we do it. I dont do this with anything else and i dont "road hunt" or anything or poach animals. So i dont know, tell me what you guys think. Thanks Wittum

In South Dakota coyotes are one of the few things it is legal to shoot from the road in your vehicle.

Wittum- I too hunt the southeast part of Kansas. There are more coyotes than rabbits out there, and we all know how much rabbits breed don't we? The best call that i have found in that area is a distressed turkey or distressed fawn call from my Johnny Stewart. They work even better if you can put a decoy out in the field. This year during bow season I saw more coyotes than bucks. That is pretty messed up. But since I have shot my buck already, the gates of hell are going to open up on those turkey bandits. The bobcats are really think as well. I have already killed three this year and and season has only been open for a little more than two weeks.songdog

At the present time I am working three ranches. The coyotes are cute in the summer time when there jumping on grass hoppers and crickets.Come calving time,The menu changes. One rancher is loosing two calves a week. One is loosing 18% of his,the other 21%.In the last two years i have shot 3 while they were trying to eat the calf as it was being born.Folks try to tell me about the studies they read ,that the little coyote,Just eats mice, insects, etc.Try to raise cattle and see what happens.

I just remembered something that you all thought might be interesting. A biologist that I know was working on his doctorate and was doing research on how many fawns were killed by coyotes. He would look for fawns during the birthing season that were llaying in the grass, tranquilize them then put radio collars on them. After the search was completed, An average of 50% of all fawns died, 45% by coyotes, some areas had fawn death tolls up in the 75%-85% range. He would chack the carcasses once he found the collars to determine tha cause of death. Pretty amazing isn't it.songdog

Coyotes are nasty devils. I know several farmers out here that have had cattle and chickens killed by them buggers. One of my recruits has a mother who weighs in at about 350 pounds but she hauls @ss with that .30-06 of hers once her show chickens start getting eaten. I bought a .223 for coyote killin' and have just hooked up with a good fellow here in Sioux City who has contacts all over Nebraska that will let me hunt their land. I can't wait to get started.

This coyote thing must be gaining steam. I saw my very FIRST coyote ever this year during firearm whitetail season. Some guys who were hunting nearby lost a couple of deer to them (poor shots). I think in Michigan you have to have a fur-harvester license as well as a small game license and you can only hunt them during the season (I think the season is long, though). I'm almost positive that you can't shoot anything out of your vehicle here. Too bad, I used to shoot armadillos in Florida as a kid with a .22 out of a truck WHAT A BLAST!

varmint hunter- let me know when you may be through the area to hunt and film coyotes. I believe that I may be able to set you up in some excellent canyons that are thick with yotes. The hides already look alot better this year than they did last year.songdog

7mm- I do not have a problem using * dogs i think thewy are awesoe as well. But where i was hunting deer last weekend, 3 a$$holes went * hunting all night long through our property. They were not using lights so we could not find them, full moon. The next day during I only saw 7 does all day, the previous 3 days we had seen around 50-60 deer a day. Those guys really pissed us off. Then last year after christmas i was out at our farm and i had my husky with me and some guys that were hunting coyotes from the road with their dogs. They turned 7 dogs loose on my husky My husky was about 100 yds. from our house and the coyote dogs were about 300 yds. behind here and closing fast, needless to say, only two of those damned dogs made it back to the truck. It was amazing what 4 rounds of 00 buck can do to a pack of coyote dogs. Those guys tried taking me to court and tried to sue me for $2500, that is $500 a dog. They lost. The judge thought that i had not done the right thing but also said that i could not really do anything else.songdog

songdog I can relate I've got feral? dogschasing deer through my 25 acres but can't bring myself to shoot them.some people love there dogs more than their children.I don't object to killing them but if they go missing or die screaming then I'm in court, and I'm not doin that for a deer.maybe if they bother my chickens ?

I tried to scare the dogs by waving my hands, they did not budge, fired a shot in the air, they kept on coming. Fired a shot at them dropped 2 in their tracks, the other kept coming fired 2 more times and dropped three more. The other two finally turned around and ran back to the truck. I could have killed them to with another shot but i did not. songdog

yep chased them through some briars, sat in one spot waiting to hear them tree one a mile away, I went thru more crap for a couple of * than I would for deer but I'll tell you it was fun!The noise from them muts was incredible and it just makes the blood flow. Then try to hit them up a tree with a .22 pistol and a red dot scope. Harder than it sounds

Wittum and Varmint Hunter- My place too is just 30 minutes or so from Sedan, Depends on who is driving. I will contact you tomorrow, Sunday aftrnoon, About a trip sometime. I went out to hunt them little hairy suckers on Friday and Saturday morning and I saw a little over 25 coyotes and 1 bobcat and 6 or 7 beavers. I shot 3 coyotes, the bobcat, and 4 beavers. All 3 of the coyotes had Mainge, has any one else experienced this. I shot them for that reason. Non of the other coyotes that i saw had mainge, actually they had very healthy looking pelts.songdog

Mange in coyotes and foxes is the first sign of overpopulation. In the latter stages they go blind. The peta bunch, would rather see them blind, and starve to death.I have a very quick fix for the mange. It travels about 3500 fps.

Varmint- Will other coyotes get the disease from the dead yotes that i have shot. Through the chain of life i believe that crows and all of those rot gut eating birds would carry the disease from carcass to carcass. Is there any meds that can be issued in food that can be air dropped to cure this disease.I did not know that this was a sign of over population. There were times when i would hardly see any coyotes and they would all have mange, Then there were times when the coyotes were so thick it was like hunting for grasshoppers in a corn field. songdog

We are using air drops in Texas for Rabies,But I have not herd of it being used for mange.Mange goes through the population very rapidly. Before the bottom feal out of the fur market,It was not a problem. The bunny huggers brought this on.I dont think you will see any problems from leaving the dead ones in the field.Coyotes are very social animals and spread it to each other. There has been some talk in certan states of ear tagging a small number of coyotes. Some tags would be worth $1000 some $500 etc.The idea is to get more hunters and trappers back in action since the fur has very little value.I have not heard of any state implemeting this program yet.I wish I had a answer for this.No one wonts to shoot one from there deer stand, and mess up a hunt.A lot of guys take up calling. When there not sucsesful the fist couple of tries they stop.I know of no other animal whose range and population is exploding like the coyotes. This is a major impact on deer,And turkey populations. Not to mention the impact on domestic stock. When we had the rabies out break in the early ninetes the State got real bussy.Mother nature starts with mange and then moves to rabies. What a wondeful job PETA has done.

Varmint Hunter- Do you know of any antibiotics that are out to cure mange. I wouyld think that once they got it they would always have until they die. Since they are such social animals, I would tend to believe that they would all be carriers of this disease in the end, killing them all out.songdog
