I want to try my .270 for a coyote hunt;but having never hunted them or read much about it. I hope some of you may give me a quick lesson as to what methods may work best.Should I use a tree- stand, blind, call, decoy, morning,or evening hunt.

The Coyote loves chickens, ducks, rabbit and cats. Best to hunt in an area where these are. If you can access an "injured rabbit" caller you'd do well. Hunt downwind. A blind is choice (10 or more feet up). Dawn and dusk are best but have seen them at high noon. Thats all I know! Good Luck!

hi i do some coyote calling i use howling and wounded rabbit call together listen to a tape of distressed rabbit to get an idea what to sound like the howling part i guess i got an Ed Sceary howler it came with a tape to use in vcr . they will come to from down wind side to try to wind you .i call in an area about 15-20 min thne go to another area if nothing happens. i had this happen also i shot a coyote after calling it in as i was leaving area 4 more coyotes where coming so stick around for a few min after to see if any other coyotes are coming. if they are hungry they will really come.i'll tell you what get a coyote called in with a few yards of you your heart will be beating so hard that will be a hard shot :-) i live in cent SD so i can see them coming from quite aways it's a blast you love calling coyotes i learned from trial and error and still learning cowdoc

My son and I are in a contest this winter, the one to shoot the most, gets all the money collected. 5 for my new Rem 700 VLS 22-250. 6 for his old 243 @ $15 = $165 in the pot.My neighbor shoots a 270 that leaves a big exit wound, Not good for pelts, but plenty of range and knock down power.alot of the time we call, but most of the otyes we see are just cruzin the back roads.Yesterday we saw 12, shot at 8, and killed 3

I cleared a field of fire for 125 yards around my ranch house in Trinity County of Northern Calif. They can't see past 100 yards but they can hear and smell you. When I butchered a pig I would dump the guts at 110 yards and would nail them at first light with my 6mm Remington handloads. I got mad after losing 6 dogs and 3 cats.Paul Jones Fitz Grips retired and loving it!!

Another thing that i have not heard mentioned yet is to break your calling up. You will wantto stay in an area for 30 min least to call, I did not do this until after my last outing when i called a pair in after 40 min of calling. Call for 30-45 seconds every 5-10 minutes. Evcessive or over calling will cause the older and wiser yots to be reluctant to cometo the call. I call as loud as i can until i have a yote in range ,350 yds. Then i use my lips and just squeak them in the rest of the way.As to lacations, I call with a crosswind, left to right or visa versa. This way you will catch the yotes trying to circle down wind of you, giving you time for a shot. To get the yotes t stop for the shot, either wistle or bark with your voice. Thesame can be done when more then one yote is approaching, after shotting the first one you can bark at the other ones and they will usssually stop as longas they havenot made out your lacation.hope all of this helps, songdog

also you might want to camouflage yourself well and also keep the sun to your back so it shadows and of course you know what it is like looking into a low lying sun the same goes for the yotes all this helps in breaking up your outline also everyone says wait this is true but dont be alarmed if you get one in just a matter of minutes (a real rush) also you might want to cover your sent I hope this helps the only thing I wish is that I had someone else to enjoy the rush with from time to timeHardtyms

I have a cousin who used to sit in the top of a windmill and call. One day he decided to lay down on the platform at the top and enjoy the sun. He dosed off and when he opened his eyes, he saw the clouds moving and thought the windmill was falling so he jumped. Broke his arm and stock. (hope he reads this )

There is a video from cabela's called "Calling all Coyotes" The ole boy not only teaches you how but shows you real good footage. It is real life hunting unlike the stuff seen on tv. Anyone that likes hunting varmints will love this video.

I hunted them in the foothills where I live, using most the methods mentioned here. The most important thing I've learned is to renain still while calling, and once you catch sight of one keep your eye on him, cause they blend into the background amazingly well, even if he bolts to run, a loud whistle will stop him dead in his tracks and give you a good opportunity for a clean shot.

CAMO IS PROBABLY YOUR BIGGEST ASSET. IF THEY CANT SEE YOU THEY CANT TELL WHAT YOU ARE. AS FAR AS CALLS GO, DIEING OR DISTRESSED ANIMALS ARE ABOUT THE BEST. I HAVE ALSO USED A 270 FROM TIME TO TIME. I SHOOT A 90GR. SEIRRA HOLLOW POINT. WORK GREAT IF YOU ARENT WORRIED ABOUT LARGE EXIT HOLES. PEICE OF ADVICE, DONT MISS. BY MISSING YOU ARE ONLY TEACHING THEM TO BE VERY WARY OF WHAT IS GOING ON, AND YOU WILL PROBABLY NEVER GET ANOTHER SHOT AT THAT ONE.

MNTNMN -Some good advice there. You might want to take your "Caps Lock" off; it's considered yelling on-line. Thanks.

The first randy anderson video, caling all coyotes is excellent. He shows you different calling methods, freezing the dog for a shot, calling locations and a whole lot more. Excellent video, probably the best that i have seen. Here is another hint that i have tried alot of the times when i walk through dense brushy draws while on my way to a calling location. I go tho a pet store and buy a couple bottles of that rabbit training scent. Make a drag rag just like you do for deer. It is great. More times thatn not i have had coyotes follow the scent trail right up into my lap, within a couple of yards. songdog
