And they would have turned around and sold it for $450. Glad you didn't take it.

Either that - or he simply didn't want it as he allready have too many on hand..

I've seen that a few times - where the dealer just offers a rediculously low price instead of saying.. no thanks.

SO IF HE HAD BOUGHT IT FOR $150 THERN RESOLD IT FOR $450= $300 PROFIT, JUST ABOUT ENOUGHT TO PAY 1/3 OF HIS OVERHEAD FOR THE DAY.

Not too different from contractors who don't want a job.

They'll overbid a job instead of saying, "No thanks," figuring that you're probably going to find someone else who will charge you a more reasonable price.

The fun part comes when you've several contractors who don't want the job and all quote high prices to get out of it. There are some homes where it is too scummy to want to do anything. I was in one that was infested with roaches, the kids and dogs were allowed to use carpeting as a bathroom, etc.

Can't blame contractors in that situation -- it was hard enough for me to be there as an adjuster... I gave her a bit more money than she needed to fix it because I didn't want to have to come back if I missed anything.

I would recommend that you avoid that guy in all of your future dealings..he sounds like a thief to me. I know he has to make a profit to pay the bills, but to lowball you like that is just plain dishonest. He has got to know what the Trappers are going for nowadays! List it here on GB and I bet you get close to $600 for it.

Standard procedure. Offer 40% of what it is worth and sell it for 110% of its value.

The new blue book lists it at 450.00 NIB,, I would say his wholesale price is around 200 bucks..Like a used car dealer, he aint gonna give you more than he can get it for at wholesale . You have to understand he may have to set on it for a while.. Or he has to price it to where it will move in a reasonable amount of time,, therefore the 150$ offer..

I would not have let him have it either, its just as easy for me to get retail price out of it, which around her for that gun is around 300.00[;)]

It is clear that you simply do not understand this business. As long as you own that broken down, almost functional beater it is going to be worth about $60, and you are darn lucky he is offering $150. If he does buy the rifle, it will be magically transformed into a very rare, highly sought, high condtion collectors item that really probably should be considered a high dollar museum peice.

With the way Winchesters are moving right now, he would not have to sit on it too long. That dealer can not just pick up the phone and find a Winchester 94 Trapper from one of his wholesalers, there are no more in the pipeline.

One would think that all the rabid Republicans on this board would understand how the highly admired small businessman operates.

Wow! I guess everyone's been down this road before. I'll just keep it. Was wanting to buy a 45-70 or 90, but I'll wait.

I used to work for someone like that too. I used to say if he owns it, that it is gold plated. If you owned the same thing, it is just rusty. He would turn the rust into gold, and make people happy for the most part. Greed got him though after awhile, and no one liked him anymore. Even his brother wouldn't have anything to do with him, and I thought that would never happen. Died lonely. Deal with fair people, and they will either give you a fair price, or let you know that they aren't interested. Remember, anything used in his shop probably was bought for nothing too.

Isn't it funny how that the gun dealer is such "scum" for making a profit, yet the butt-raping oil companies are "just capitalist" when they are both making a profit?

Of course, the gun dealer didn't get a $400 MILLION retirement package like the CEO of Exxon........

Merc (who never ceases to be amused by the hypocrisy on this board...)

Making a profit is one thing...stealing is another. Fair pricing and honest dealings get you more business. Word gets around if you are a thief.
