Help my memory

Just bought an old cabinet today at a flea market. On it is ingraved U.S.W.P.A. and a number. Being (only) 50 I remember hearing people talk about the WPA during the war, but can't remember what it was.
Can anyone tell me about a site that explains it. Tried a google search and only got womens polo Assoc.

The WPA was started by FDR as one of the programs which was supposed to help the country out of the depression. Built roads, parks,dams etc. I will refrain from making further comments regarding the worth/cost of many of these programs.
