I just got a used 870 on GB, & it has a small amount of rust where the barrel meets the receiver. What is the best process to clean it up & preserve the bluing? Thanks, Bryan

4 0000 steelwool,or stainless steelwool with gun oil, very light pressure, normally takes it off.

Yep, steel wool will work. A lot of people recommend Break Free CLP and I picked up a container of it. Last time I cleaned up some rust I cleaned it first with the CLP, then steel wool and it looked great. A word to the wise though with steel wool. Try it first in a place that might normally be invisible just to see what it'll do to the finish/bluing. Learned that the hard way.[This message has been edited by GreenLantern (edited 02-21-2002).]

I agree with everybody else...be sure to remove the barrel and catch the INSIDE of the receiver...if it's on the barrel at that spot....is prob. in the rec....

Thanks, I wanted to pick some brains before I started on it with the steel wool. It's a new baby (to me!) & wanted to treat her gently.... (boys & their toys...)Bryan
