Teen columnist: Right to bear arms best defense against terroristsTIMOTHY J. WORKMANCitizen Teen ColumnistJan. 15, 2002The United States of America, despite the current president, is at the highest level of liberalism, militarism and just plain insanity. The United State has become a police state. Regardless of the times and the circumstances, we should not have to live with violations of our liberties. We the people must not play into the hands of our enemy by means of abolishing our rights. In Nazi Germany, the Jews were deprived of firearms and assured that they were safe under the rule of the tyrant Hitler. Within a short while, they were taken out of their homes, defenseless, and experimented on. They were separated from their children, turned into slave laborers, then burned, frozen, starved, shot, beaten, gassed, hanged, butchered and raped. Why? They believed that to sacrifice freedom meant safety. It's maddening when I hear of increased safety measures in air travel (and elsewhere) that are strictly forbidden by the U.S. Constitution. It maddens me when I hear ignorant people explain that civil liberties must be set aside for our safety. No, the Constitution is not just "set aside" during wartime. It is not a document that doesn't remain in force and effect after a national atrocity such as we saw Sept. 11.What does it say in the Constitution that is driving too many Americans to willingly give up their freedoms? Where is it? Down at the bottom, in size 4 font: "P.S. All of the above does not apply during wartime."Give me a break! If this country keeps this up, I'm shipping out. Next stop, Switzerland, where there is a chicken in every pot, a cigar in every mouth, and a gun in every pocket. Hey, the more weapons, the merrier.Had the people on all the flights that crashed Sept. 11 been armed, including the pilots, the terrorists wouldn't have thought of pulling a stunt like they did. An armed person is not one to mess with. That is why the people couldn't get up the courage to battle the terrorists who were armed with box cutters, glorified razors serving as knives. Had a single person on each flight, or all of them, had guns, the terrorists never would have stormed the cockpit. Our country is properly armed to the teeth militarily to meet and defeat with force any enemy. Yet, we have federal and state officials who are working to further make sure we become victims while they deny us the basic human right of self-defense.The violation of our rights is what killed those hundreds of people in the planes and those thousands in the buildings. Because of the anti-gun lobbyists out there, we need to be hassled with increased safety measures. If everyone carried a gun, a terrorist wouldn't get far. This is the plan of the liberals and the commies out there. As long as they can take a chunk out of a liberty they wish to be rid of, it will become easier to violate other rights. In effect, the terrorists didn't kill the people on the planes. It was Boxer, Feinstein, Schumer, and oh, somebody get me a barf bag, Sarah Brady. She is the kind of woman who can end the lives of thousands and not care, and drive even her own self to the grave with lung cancer lighting up cigarette after cigarette without batting an eyelash. She is the terrorist. She and her sniveling cronies killed thousands in the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and on the airliners that crashed. The victims were long deprived of their right to bear arms in selected areas. Her regard for life is nonexistent, and that is what defines a true terrorist. It's sickening, really. The U.S. Constitution was not made for, or in, peacetime. If people want to sacrifice their freedoms for safety, the truth of it is, they will get, as Benjamin Franklin said, neither freedom nor security in the end. What they will get inevitably is oppression and everlasting turmoil. In times such as these, a tyrant will not step up for the welfare of the country. He will only make it seem that way. We will fail because we will lack moral fiber, a willful leader with character backed by the people until we will become socially and economically unstable. The die will be cast, and when we fully let down our guard, we again will be invaded by and overthrown by the true barbarians of the new millennium: terrorists. If you reject history's lessons, our end will not differ from the way many other regimes and governments have fallen. Only this time around, it will be worse, for we have no new lands to turn to.My father always says, "It only has to happen once." Second chances are almost as hard to come by as miracles, and lest we forget, our country already is a second chance.Timothy J. Workman is a freshman at Academy of Tucson.
