I was at the range today- I fired my sks, my 9mm handgun, my .243 win.- then I fired my 300 H&H Mag.. That is when I heard the gentlmen next to me say-"Now your getting down to brass tacks"! Now,this man knows his guns. Out of all the guns I have brought to the range- he can tell me all there is to know! He is never wrong! On the way home -I began to think (my wife say's this is not good) about the words he spoke-"getting down to brass tacks". I began to wish I knew where that term came from. Then I thought about all the terms we use every day- "let it fly" "he's worth his salt" "a square meal". You get the point. Yea! I am curious where these terms mean and where they come from. Who among you have a term and what it means?Brass tacks?- I dont know. Any of you have a saying and an explanation? I know that-"worth your salt"-relates to the Roman times when a man worked all day and salt was paid to him instead of money and if he worked real hard-he was worth his weight in salt. (salt was worth more than gold).

"Moving along at a pretty good clip"daddo,I`m married to a latin gal,and she questions all my sayings..and sometimes I don`t have an explanation. Some times she will come out with a phrase in english,..it will not be good english, maybe backwards,or something.I will correct her ,and while explaining why...I`ll think,..now that makes a lot more sense the way she said it!!.218
