Beware the "Tyranny of the Majority"
That's why we have majority rule, but minority protection...

    BOYWONDER- HUH?
We do not have "majority rule" in this country.

"The powers delegated by the proposed constitution to the federal governmentare few and defined, and will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace negotiation, and foreign commerce"
    -James Madison

    Salzo,
you are correct, I was pointing out that the results of the poll shouldn't be taken as the "right" answer. The majority does not interpret the constitution (directly anyway).

Well, as an atheist, I simply omit those two words when I recite the pledge. I would be happier with the original wording, but I never felt intimidated by all those terrible Judeo-Christian bullies in grade school (decided that religion wasn't for me by second grade, to my parents' dismay). The people that bring these complaints are simply too damn insecure &/or publicity hungry. There are more important issues in the world than this.

Its time to start being less tollerant of those who are offended by the things that makes our Nation great ... If our Flag offends you; Go to another country! If our pledge offends you; Go to another country! If our Anthem offends you: Go to another country! If our money offends you; Go to another country! If our laws offend you; Go to another country! ...
    ... GET THE PICTURE?

Whether or not you belive in God, be thankful that our forefathers wrote the Constitution and defined it as rights endowed by our Creator. This Judeo-Christian theme gives the Constitution meaning much deeper than it would have if those rights were endowed by man or the Constitution itself. It implies that NO MAN has the power to take those rights away unlike the Parlimentary system of the UK which is based upon the premise that all rights enjoyed by man are those that the Parlimentary system feels fit to endow upon man. To remove God and Creator from our historical fabric is to weaken the rights that we enjoy. Heck, even if the founding fathers had no belief in God, I'm sure glad they made up the concept that our rights came from a being much greater than man. To take away that notion is to hand over our rights to a piece of paper that is just a physical piece of material that can be destroyed by man.

In addition to putting the words back, the US military should have the troop's belt buckles inscribed "God With US" too. This way we'll really have God's protection if we have to go into battle.

I will resound what many others have already said...

If you don't like it...get the @#$! out...

The people that start these things disgrace our society when they attack the very roots of what America was founded on...

For those who beleive in God, it shouldn't matter, as you can take God out of the pledge, but cannot take God from the person. It is good, in my opinion to recognise God in this country, but lets not let it give cause for Americans to hate Americans.
God is not a religion, but a being. Catholic, Babtist, Lutherin, Methodist, Protestant ect.- are religions. I am not religious, but am a christian.
Those who are Athiests have their own beleifs and/or religions and have that right in this country, "that is America".
I choose to not judge otherwise- we will all have the answeres someday.
You are judged not by what you say, but what you do!

I'm sure, by now, most of you know where I stand regarding religion so I won't go there on this thread.
Therefore, I must vote with Iconoclast and Kimberkid.

The kids may learn the words, and they may recite the pledge in school, but do they understand what the words mean? For most kids, I doubt it.

PS - Do you Southerners like the "indivisible" part?

PPS - Notice it says, "liberty and justice for all," not a free ride. I guess I should have said in the first paragraph that many adults don't get it, not just kids.

Busy AR: Yeah, I was. My point is merely that words invoking a deity seem to get a lot of people aroused. Those words on a belt buckle surely didn't have much of an impression of whatever god they were addressed to, did they. I'm not sure those words in a pledge of allegience make those repeating them any "better" or "worse" than if they were not present. As a matter of fact, I declined to join the VFW because of their requirement of attesting to a deity. When required to "swear" during enlistments, I demanded (and got) the "affirm" version. I just sort of think a deity has better things to do than worry if I am busy invoking him/her now and then.

Politicions take an oak to uphold the constitution, then stab us in the back. That's politics, and we are so used to it, we joke about it but don't do anything about it! That's the frog in the oven affect! And we (the uninformed) are falling for it !
