Can't remember the name of the rifle (pre-war) which had the magazine setting atop the reciever which was a retrofit for military use. I beleive it was a bolt action. Any ideas?

Yes sir! Thats absolutely right. Want to see if I can find one and what they cost. Don't have one in my collection.
