The Lie of Firearm "Safe Storage"

I see the main stream media and the antigun movement are doing their level best to get every state to pass "safe storage" legislation for firearms. Then along comes Mr. Lott, who was once one of them, and shoots holes in the whole idea. First you must realize that the anti's definition of safe storage means the firearm must be locked up in some way that makes it unusable to anyone who needs it. They don't understand that safe storage means that only the owner has access to the firearm. Police officers have practiced safe storage for years, by wearing the firearm. They also practice keeping it from others.
You are beginning to see more and more people in America practice safe storage by keeping their firearm handy or with them at all times. This means they are safe, and the bad guys who would do harm are not safe. That's how it should be. You and I know that when the bad guy is afraid that they may be apprehended or shot while doing their evil deed, they will hesitate or give up the idea all together. That is what safety is all about.
The part that the antigun crowd doesn't like to have you know is that trigger locks and safes don't allow you, the owner of the firearm, to get to it in a timely manner and use it if you need to. While serving as Sheriff and before I was asked many times what is the best defense handgun to carry? My answer was always, "The one you have in your hand, ready to go, when you need it." The one left at home doesn't help. The one locked up, that you can't get to, will not help save you or anyone else.
Richard Dechambaeu (former director of hunting for the NRA and now radio host) and I were at the NRA annual meeting in Seattle, Washington. We were walking through the exhibit area and noticed a nice looking young lady who was manning a booth selling trigger locks. She was telling everyone in the area that the lock she had would allow access to the firearm in three seconds. Richard told her that it wouldn't protect him from me because I had been timed drawing a Smith and Wesson 9MM handgun from a snapped holster and firing twelve rounds into the center of a target at five yards in a little over two seconds. She had no answer for that.
The sad thing is, no antigun group has an answer for this. Mr. Lott proved it by doing research all over the nation. These antigun groups that are pushing "feel good" legislation that keeps us from protecting ourselves and others are only going to harm our rights. They will say it is "for the children". Well we know that is a lie. If you live in a state that has these laws and one of your family or you are injured or killed because of this stupid law, then the state should be sued. Any government that would take your right of self protection from you is not a government by the people and for the people.
This safe storage agenda, along with the background checks and other laws only limit our right to keep and bear arms. The old saying about eating the apple one bite at a time applies to our rights also. First the government took the right to own automatic weapons, sawed off shotguns, and silencers for firearms. The government then allowed ownership of these if you would go through the back ground check and pay them money. The problem with this is that only honest citizens take the time and effort to do this and the criminals still have these weapons. The theory that gun registration will stop crime is shown to be another lie. Our rights have been taken, little by little for years now, and they keep chipping away each day.
The real truth is that the only way for our society to be safe and free is to allow our rights to be exercised without any restrictions except those imposed by the equal rights of everyone else. History has shown that when we carry and have our means of protection with us, then the bad guys stay away. The weapon need not even be used to prevent the attacks from taking place. I for one would sure be unhappy if I didn't have the means to protect myself or one of my family if needed. I protected myself and others many times over the years I was in law enforcement. The simple truth is I never had to shoot anyone to do it. However, if I had not had the firearm and gave notice, by word or action, that I would use it, many lives would have been lost. It's that simple for everyone.
