TOOLBABE vs the Quail

Toolbabe hatched out some Quail a couple of months ago. At first she kept them in a cardboard box in the back room. Then one evening we were sitting down for supper. And all the sudden we were being dive bombed by flying Quail. Next day it was demanded that I build an enclosed cage. As useual I went into overkill. I built a wooden box with a seperat compartment that has a light mounted and wired to keep the chicks warm. I even used my biskut joiner to make all the joints.
Toolbabe has now decided that thay are big enough to be out in a large cage. So she came up with the Idea of building a frame out of PVC pipe. And covering it with chicken wire.
So she went to the farm store and bought some 6ft chicken wire. And 1in PVC pipe and fittings.
This evening we went out and constructed the cage. 6ft X 6ft X 16ft. All covered with chicken wire. We then carried the small cage over and put it into the new one and opened the doors. Out flew the quail. Thay flew around a little bit then setteled down. Toolbabe sure was proud of her new cage. Said "see I told you it would work" Right as the quail started to squeez right through the chicken wire. We caught all but 2 of them though. So now tomorrow we will have to put smaller wire on it. I hope it works this time.

When I was a kid we hatched quail eggs under bantie hens. If I remember the eggs were sometimes to dry for the quail chicks to peck out so we would slowly help them get out of the eggs. When they were hatched it didn't take them long to get moving. We hatched out a lot of fowl. Ring neck , goldens and lady amherst pheaseants and quail.

When we built our pens we kept the heighth of them down to 18-24"'s because the ringnecks were so flitey if a dog or stranger went by they could get up enough flying speed they could injure themselves on a 6 foot pen. I don't remember having that trouble with quail, sometimes we just let the bantie hen take care of them. That really keeps them busy.

Tools1.....Instead of buying new chicken wire, it might be less costly to buy some bird netting and line the inside of the pen with it. Just fasten it to the existing chicken wire. Bird netting is used to put over fruit trees to keep the birds out. Other uses too, probably. The bird netting can be bought at most hardware stores and comes in rolls. Hope this is of some help.

Tools1....Great news. I've used the bird netting before and it works well. A couple of pens I made for my pheasants only had the netting for a ceiling. That way, when they flew up when startled, the netting would act like a cushion and give a little so that the birds wouldn't get hurt. Godd luck with the quail. Bob White?
