Mueller says walk-in suicide bombers ``inevitable'' in United States
PETE YOST Associated Press Writer
ALEXANDRIA, VA. (AP) - Walk-in suicide bombers like those who have attacked public places in Israel will hit the United States eventually, FBI Director Robert Mueller said Monday.
``I think we will see that in the future, I think it's inevitable,'' Mueller said in response to a question during a speech to the National Association of District Attorneys meeting in suburban Alexandria, Va.
In his opening remarks to the group, Mueller flatly predicted that ``there will be another terrorist attack. We will not be able to stop it. It's something we all live with.''
Mueller said the degree of fanaticism an informant must exhibit to get into the inner circle of a terrorist group makes it difficult for law enforcement agencies to penetrate such organizations and prevent such attacks.
``I wish I could be more optimistic,'' he said.
Mueller's prediction follows Vice President Dick Cheney's warning Sunday that because no specific information is available, the United States is finding it difficult to respond to the latest intelligence hints that al-Qaida may be planning another attack.
Mueller said law enforcement has been somewhat successful in combating acts of terrorism in Northern Ireland by developing sources who could provide information about terrorist plans and by using electronic surveillance.
But he said the difficulty of getting informants inside terrorist groups targeting the United States makes it much harder to obtain advance information.
Cheney said Sunday he sees ``a real possibility'' that walk-in suicide bombers may hit the United States if those who have attacked Israel succeed in changing the situation in the Middle East.
``Terrorism is an evil, pernicious thing, and it is one of the biggest challenges we've ever faced as a nation,'' Cheney said.
At the prosecutors meeting, Mueller said the FBI now believes that ``an al-Qaida bomb maker'' constructed the shoe bomb that Richard Reid had when he was apprehended aboard a flight from Paris to the United States in December.
Mueller made the comment in describing how the FBI is increasing its recruitment of scientific experts to help in terrorism investigations and is ``centralizing analytical capability'' to coordinate evidence gathering.
Mueller also said the arrest of Abu Zubaydah, a top al-Qaida operative, during raids in Pakistan in March was the result of a joint FBI-CIA operation. He cited the raids as an example of how the traditional wall between the FBI and the CIA is coming down as the two agencies battle terrorism.

"It was like that when I got here".
"It was like that when I got here".
While I will hope and pray that I'm wrong, I believe the question is not IF it will happen, but how much time we have until it DOES happen!!
They will come after our children, and God help us when they succeed!

Suicide bombing may not be the most likely here. There's an unlimited supply of suicide bombers in Israeli territory, but here in the US with small cells looking to cause trouble, chances are they'll want to walk away to terrorize another day. Anyone who is thinking along the lines of defending against a bomb blast with a gun needs to start over with their basic premise. Nobody is saying that makes sense. On the other hand, there are lots of unpredictable scenarios where self defense, even prevention, may be feasible. Everything depends upon the type of situation and the weapons the terrorists are able to obtain. Hopefully, they will be limited to low tech methods.
Since the type of attack is entirely unpredictable, it makes no sense to rule out a defensive weapon in the fatally erroneous assumption that it's going to be useless against an invisible bomber who will die in the blast and therefore be unavailable for defensive action, apprehension or interrogation. Remember that an Israeli citizen was able to use a small arm to stop a suicide bomber whose bomb's primer misfired before he or she was able to set off the main charge by secondary means. And that's just one example of the usefulness of an armed citizen.

Daddy's Day at School
Her hair was up in a ponytail
Her favorite dress tied with a bow.
Today was Daddy's Day at school,
And she couldn't wait to go.
But her mommy tried to tell her,
That she probably should stay home.
Why the kids might not understand,
If she went to school alone.
But she was not afraid;
Whe knew just waht to say.
What to tell her classmates
Of why he wasn't there today.
But still her mother worried,
For her to face this day alone.
And that was why once again,
She tried to keep her daughter home.
But the little girl went to school,
Eager to tell them all.
About a dad she never sees,
A dad who never calls.
There were daddies along the wall in back,
For everyone to meet.
Children squirming impatiently,
Anxious in their seats.
One by one the teacher called,
A student from the class.
To introduce their daddy,
As seconds slowly passed.
At last the teacher called her name,
Every child turned to stare.
Each of them was searching,
For a man who wasn't there.
"Where's her daddy at?"
She heard a boy call out.
"She probably doesn't have one,"
Another student dared to shout.
And from somewhere near the back,
She heard a daddy say,
"Looks like another deadbeat dad,
Too busy to waste his day."
The words did not offend her,
As she smiled up at her mom.
And looked back at her teacher,
Who told her to go on.
And with hands behind her back,
Slowly she began to speak.
And out from the mouth of a child,
Came words incredibly unique.
"My Daddy couldn't be here,
Because he lives so far away.
But I know he wishes he could be,
Since this is such a special day.
And though you cannot meet him,
I wanted you to know.
All about my daddy,
And how much he loves me so.
He loved to tell me stories,
He taught me to ride my bike.
He surprised me with pink roses,
And taught me to fly a kite.
We used to share fudge sundaes,
And ice cream in a cone.
And though you cannot see him,
I'm not standing here alone.
Cause my daddy's always with me,
Even though we are apart.
I know because he told me,
He'll forever be in my heart."
With that, her little hand reached up,
And lay across her chest.
Feeling her own heartbeat,
Beneath her favorite dress.
And from somewhere in the crowd of dads,
Her mother stood in tears.
Proudly watching her daughter,
Who was wise beyond her years.
For she stood up for the love,
Of a man not in her life.
Doing what was best for her,
Doing what was right.
And when she dropped her hand back down,
Staring straight into the crowd.
She finished with a voice so soft,
But its message was clear and loud.
"I love my daddy very much,
He's my shining star.
And if he could, he'd be here,
But heaven's just too far.
You see he was a fireman,
And died just this past year.
When airplanes hit the towers,
And taught Americans to fear.
But sometimes when I close my eyes,
It's like he never went away."
And then she closed her eyes,
And saw him there that day.
And to her mother's amazement,
She witnessed with surprise.
A room full of daddies and children,
All starting to close their eyes.
Who knows what they saw before them,
Who knows what they felt inside.
Perhaps for merely a second,
They saw him at her side.
"I know you're with me Daddy,"
To the silence she called out.
And what happened next made believers,
Of those once filled with doubt.
Not one in that room could explain it,
For each of their eyes had been closed.
But there on the desk beside here,
Was a fragrant long-stemmed pink rose.
And a child was blessed, if only for a moment,
By the love of her shining bright star.
And given the gift of believing,
That heaven is never too far.
