Yet another gun law question

Why is it that none of the AR-15 pistols (i.e. Carbon-15) have barrel shrouds? Is there a law prohibiting such things?

    I think I found it. Looks like it falls under the definition of 'assault weapon':Title 18, Section 921(30) The term ''semiautomatic assault weapon'' means -(C) a semiautomatic pistol that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least 2 of -(i) an ammunition magazine that attaches to the pistol outside of the pistol grip; (ii) a threaded barrel capable of accepting a barrel extender, flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer;(iii) a shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel and that permits the shooter to hold the firearm with the nontrigger hand without being burned;(iv) a manufactured weight of 50 ounces or more when the pistol is unloaded;

    by threaded barrel being able to accept forward handgrips, does that include say an M-4 with a weaver rail system installed in place of the handguards and able to accept a handgrip, pac-4 mount, vli(flashlight) etc.also why the 50 oz rule?

    M-4 would be a rifle, that definition I posted only covers pistols, here's the one fire rifles: (B) a semiautomatic rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least 2 of -(i) a folding or telescoping stock;(ii) a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon;(iii) a bayonet mount;(iv) a flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor; and(v) a grenade launcher; I don't see a problem installing a hand rail for a forward grip. Also, I wonder if those 37mm flare launchers are considered 'grenade launchers'?This is only my guess on the 50oz rule, but I've got to imagine the morons who were proposing these regulations wanted to ban anything and everything but couldn't do it. But they were smart enough to realize any pistol made basically from a cut down rifle was going to be rather heavy so they squeezed the 50oz rule in with the rest of them. While it didn't completely eliminate them I'd have to say it sure reduced their appeal to the general market. Seen the new Olympic Arms OA-98? Looks like swiss cheese. All the holes drilled to lighten it up. That's 1 or 2 reasons why I wouldn't buy it.

    If the gernade launcher has an affect: What about the old Ishapors and French MAS? Is that a way that the gun grabbers are trying to out law a few more collectables? The problem is none of the stores around here sell WWII hand gernades.

    As for barrel shrouds, apparently it is okay to affix an aftermarket barrel shroud to your gun as long as it is not threaded on. You can pin it, screw it, clamp it -- just as long as it is not "permanently affixed."Strange, though. Anything that screws onto a threaded muzzle isn't permanently affixed, either, so if they allowed threaded barrels they still wouldn't have muzzle attachments "permanently affixed."
