Some of my favorite dead beat bidder excuses:

"I'm sorry, my son got at my computer & bid when I wasn't looking, he's only 10, so I guess you can't sell this gun to him..."

"I'm sorry, but I just got a call from the hospital, my wife just wrecked the car... She's all right, but I can't afford to buy this gun now...."

"Your not going to believe this, but I lost my job today... right after I placed that bid on your gun....."

"Sir, I'm sorry to inform you that we will not be able to complete this deal. My husband has since died, and I have no need for a gun like that"

"I'm sorry to inform you that I will not be sending payment on the auction I bid on. I found the exact same item elsewhere for $10 less"

"Hi, I sent you payment today 8/1/01"
"Hi , I need your name & address to send payment" 8/4/01
"Hi, my wife forgot to send the payment today, but I'll have it out tomorrow" 8/7/01
"Hi, I need your name & address for payment please" 8/12/01
"Hi, did you receive my payment yet?" 8/13/01
"Hi, I'm still waiting for you to send me your address so I can send you payment" 8/20/01

"Hello.. I'm sorry I placed that bid on your gun, I really did not want to buy it, but I have a bad habit of getting caught up in these auctions...and , well, you know... Silly me. I promise it won't happen again. You seem like a nice seller, please don't leave negative feedback"

"Good evening sir. I'm sorry, but apparently my wife has placed a bid on one of your auctions. She was looking for a birthday present for me, I had hinted around about wanting a new deer rifle, but unfortunately our state does not
allow us to use belt fed machine guns for deer hunting, so I must pass on this deal. Sorry to have put your through the trouble, & hope you understand my situation."

OK, I admit the last one did not actually happen..... but at this point it wouldn't surprise
me a bit

Let's here some of the stuff you other guys ran into...

I haven't got any deadbeat bidders yet but I had this one lady win an auction which stated that I only accept money orders or paypal. She sent an email asking if she could pay with a money order or check. I told her to refer to the auction and note that it said money order or paypal. She then requested my address so that she could send her payment. This is rediculous, she could get that information from the paypal notification or the "checkout" process within ebay. I sent it to her anyway, and a week later, I receive an lumpy envelope from her. She sent cash, down to the last penny, taped to paper. I couldn't believe that it made it's way from FL to VA!

I have had most of these excuses, and then some.I got the one about the "child" bidding and wondered, since it takes a PASSWORD to place the bid, do the parents really give the kids their password? LOL. The job one comes up on a regular basis. On small $$$ auctions, I usually give them the option of cash. Some do it and I have not lost one in the mail yet. Usually tell them to send bills and I will send change with widget.

If I knew then, what I know now.

Some people are not smart enough to NOT have Windows remember their password. This may be convenient, but not necessarily smart. It would be very easy for someone's kid or significant other to log on to someone's pc ,if they have their user id, and cause conflicts or trouble.

Actually, none of those are new. I have had most of them. And the more angry and insistent they are that their story is true, the more likely it is a lie.

"Sorry, my husband bid on this item but he committed suicide with a handgun bought at this auction".

I said if you send me a copy of the obituary, I won't place negative feedback. If you don't send the obituary, that's alright too, it won't matter much if I post negative feedback since he's dead and won't be bidding anymore.

And there were people who actually thought I was a jerk for handling it that way!

    that's a good one!
I don't feel so bad anymore.
I just got this one the other day:

    Hello,
I am going to end this auction in "buy it now",
but I wanted to know if we could work out a payment
plan. It would really help me. You probably
maintain a house and know how hard it is to hold
onto a lot of money. And I saw this firearm, and it
was so cheap, I couldn't resist. So let me know
what you think. I am also a member of many other
firearm auction site, and a 60 period of pay is
normal, but varies among individuals. Get back to
me as soon as you can.

A 60 period of pay on an auction site?
    some people amaze me

needless to say you know I didn't see a penny

I guess I am one of the lucky ones. I have had almost no trouble with bidders. Everyone I've dealt with has acted in a professional manner. I clearly state in my auctions I only ship to U.S.A. I had one guy from Belgium that had the high bid on a couple of Browning Pistol Boxes. I told him no harm no foul, I would just auction them again. Made him mad, he wanted the boxes at whatever the cost. So I quoted him a shipping charge, never heard from him again.

I forgot my aluminum foil hat and the aliens got control of my mind and made me bid on this shot gun. They wanted to mount in on their space ship. Can you take payment in Venutian zibberfremes?

I have a seller that I have bought from before. Good to deal with. Just bought another gun from him. Asked if he still had the FFL from last time. He said yes and that he could use it. Sent him a cashiers check. A few days later he E-Mails me that he has the check but needs an FFL. Go figure.

I guess I'm just lucky. I've had few deadbeats. Three guys who bid on single rounds of ammo & then bailed because I wouldn't break the law & ship it First Class mail. One who totally disappeared. One truly dead (letter from estate executor). Three rubber checks. But this is out of at least a thousand sales. Along the way I've heard a lot of excuses, mostly problems with ISPs and email accounts, but almost always I believe these were legit because I've walked several miles in the same shoes. I also have had some folks who were wicked late because of hospitalizations, business trips & etc. I guess I'm just naive / gullible / trusting to think that people actually have these things happen when they should be planning their lives around my auction listings.

I've gotten "I have brain cancer, and now I can't pay" from two different people!

My wife bought me the same thing for Christmas, but I'll pay the auction fee.

boeboe -- Sounds like you had an anti-gunner trying to be clever, but you fixed her wagon.

BlueTic -- that one may work at K-Mart, but wouldn't carry much weight with me. Looks like you've got two of these now.

As for "I found one for $10 less," so what? You bought mine too, and it's a contract. If you don't pay up, you've earned negative feedback and a non-paying bidder report. And I get to sell it again anyway. So look what $10 cost you....
