With Airplanes having been the chosen weapon for the last volley against us, and the massive amount of money and energy spent to keep this from happening again, worries have spread to the trucking industry, mainly hazardous material carriers, as how to protect themselves and the country from terrorist from hijacking tankers and other carriers of hazardous material and using them as bombs. With the goal to arm pilots or have skymarshals on each and every plane, do you think that the average truckdriver will become the next victim, and his(or her) truck used to kill, or distoy targets in this country? Since Dept of Transportation rules keep us from carrying firearms, or most other weapons, what do you think we, or the country we live in should do to protect us from having a tankerload of gasoline or aviation fuel expoded in a schoolyard, or business center? And who has assumed the responsibility of protecting the truckdriver, since they don't let us protect ourselves? Sandman2234

Yuour right sandman. Pretty much any tanker truck carrying most any kind of petroleum product is a rollin' bomb. You know how the authorities are tho. They'll wait till it happens to say "maybe we should do something about this".

Almost all the terrorists had links to CDL driving schools. As well as flight training.I don't think they were in those schools to kill time.

If I was a truck driver I would be packing regardless of the idiotic rules.

I used to carry my Colt Officer's .45 till I got robbed down in Miami, and it didn't do me any good. My reaction if exercised, would have gotten me in more trouble than I could have dug my way out of with a backhoe. In the interim, my truck was searched twice, looking for contraband.Finding a firearm would have cost me my livelyhood. I would prefer not to make criminals out of us, in order for us to protect ourselves.Knowledge that any driver they assault could be armed, and most likely is, would be a deterent to this to say the least.

Sandman, as the dear, departed JohnnYuma, a trucker who used to post here before his untimely death said many times, "I'd rather be judged by 12 jurors, than killed by 1 bum."

Learn self-defence at Thunder Ranch or takesome MERCENARY training in canada ,I took the stuff and dont care if i have a Gun or not there are 114 points in the Human body you can hit with a + tire iron for instant elimination ,a screwdriver can do worders in expert hands ,the same truck you drive can be your weapon ,a slammed door in a head ,crushed fingers ,a face driven in a hot exaust pipe can make any terrorist cease and "decease" HE HE HE ! Ever tossed a guy in the engine and closed the hood ? try it!Be sure he will never make it to Guantanamo !.

Used to haul liquid oxygen & liquid hydrogen. What do you think would happen if a trailer load of that went boom?

Sandman,This was an issue discussed here (and elsewhere) soon after Sept. 11th.But like Pelican said; nobody will suggest doing anything till after something happens. In the meantime, when it was brought up here before, someone suggested a flare gun (they joked about how it would make them real easy to spot as they run away).Seriously, has anyone ever done any testing on "effectiveness" of flares?

I think the Judge has the right idea...Walk tall and carry a big stick, and a big knife, and a great dane (mine like to travel), and a flare gun, and a slingshot, and a blowgun, and a can of OC, and a 'hawk, and a hammer, and...do whatever it is you have to do to make sure you keep walking tall and your adversaries don't...

Dread:That's liquid nitrogen, brainiac.A liquid oxygen or hydrogen spill would probably suffocate the driver, and then detonate when someone with a lit cigarette drove by.I know hydrogen is more volatile than gasoline fumes. But I heard somewhere that pure oxygen doesnt burn per se, but instead just causes normal flame to burn 50X faster than normal. I'm not sure though.I'd be more concerned about a smart lunatic who adds motor oil and ammonium phosphate fertilizer to the aviation-fuel tanker after stealing it and lets it simmer for a few days before driving it through the lobby of a building.Timothy McVeigh only had a UHaul full of the stuff. Imagine twice as much. The Murrah Building had the whole front blown up, because McVeigh parked on the street. He had enough of a sense of self-preservation to park on the street and run away instead of just flooring it up the steps and through the front door.A blast like that would tear out the bottom 5 floors on all sides and shatter all the supports, not just one side. It would bring down any building in the world. The more I think about it, the more scared I get.I tink I want my bobble now, Mommy.

Sandman --For one thing, carry a cell phone.I recently saw Tim Russert interviewing Bill O'Reilly on the phenomenon of the changed world after 9/11 and they said and agreed upon the most remarkable things: "We're all soldiers." It's what the Second Amendment was saying all along of course, but now it's been proven -- times change, and the Constitution was written to protect us over a wide variety of circumstances. We take away our own right of protection at our peril. To get to the point, what that means is, yes, there is some risk, but for the individual trucker, given the number of trucks in America, the risk is relatively small. That doesn't mean every American should still not be alert. Given your situation as you have described it, I would do what banks do: Let them have what they want, then call 911 on your (well hidden) cell phone and put the cops on their tail before they can get where they are going. Carry any other clever electronic homing device you can think of -- Lo-Jak would be good if you can afford it. In any case, those Guardian .380s look pretty nice as pocket pistols go, if you fear being killed by the hijackers before they drive off to do their dirty work. Heck, cut the middle out of a small Bible with a snap closure, glue some of the pages down and stick it in your pocket. They'll think you're a peaceful trucker....
