Laws want to control people2002-02-24GUNS Regarding the editorial, ``Legislature should close gun loophole,'' the two bills your editorial supports are only possible because the Republican Party lost a seat in the House last November.Let's be honest about all gun laws -- they are people-control laws with a central government taking away your personal freedoms. The ``dangerous loophole'' you refer to in the 1994 Brady Bills concerns private ownership rights and that is why it wasn't written into law. There are 34 states which agree with that eight years later. The failure of the Brady Bills stems from a failure to prosecute fraudulent purchaser statements and illegal building of purchase records by anti-gun political appointees in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms for future total gun confiscation. The claim in 2000 by the BATF of 30 percent of 1999 crimes linked to gun show purposes is no more believable than our President Clinton's claim of no-involvement with Monica. The BATF was a political tool for gun confiscation. The dozens of yearly WAC gun shows have gun transactions between qualified members only. Each member signs a federal gun purchase form, the same as used by licensed dealers. The only reason these two bills didn't make it out of committees is because it is an election year. The liberal margin is too close and the voter reaction in 1994 is fresh in their minds. It's pure politics and the public will be manipulated with fear again in the future. There is an old saying, ``Those who give up liberty for safety, deserve neither.''Charles See ZederNorth BendCOUNTY http://www.eastsidejournal.com/sited/story/html/83798
