I know the .40 bullet is ballisticly better than the 9mm, but buy how much? Is it twice as better than a 9mm? And im talking about factory ammo, no special reloads.

depends on wich 9mm were talkin bout here.............standard 9mm luger, or .357sig.... the superior 9mm round necked down from a .40 case.

Good point. Im talking about a 9mm that a beretta 92 would take. Im guessing a 9mm parabellum or 9*19. Can a beretta 92 take a .357 sig with the proper barrel?

The berreta 92 cannot take a .357 sig because the spring is different as well as the clip... Maybee the berreta 96 with a drop in .357sig barrel. but I dont know if they make one. my sig. in .357 sig... can take a .40 by just switching the barrel. the same thing with the glock. If you own a glock in .40 you can replace the barrel with a drop in .357 sig.... of the 3 rounds the .357 sig is the hardest hitting, most fpe, and fps. probably the most superior handgun round on the market today, except maybee the 10mm....I currently own a berreta 92s and like it just fine in 9mm.. my friend chris. a local leo owns a berreta 96 in .40.... the 2 guns are along the same lines in recoil dept.. the .357sig has much more recoil than both. Try going too your browser and just typing in .357sig. a bunch of pages will come up.. they will show the comparison between the 3 rounds.. I found it very informative.

For now, I'm staying with 9mm. As my skill level progresses (IF), I may try larger calibers just for fun. Here is one man's opinion favoring 9mm, which follows my line of thinking only he knows more about it than I do so you don't have to take my word for it:

The best stopper in the 9mm, statistically speaking, is the higher velocity 115-grain loading by a first rate manufacturer. In fact, it may be the only really good stopper in the 9mm.

What I like about the .40 is the wider selection of good choices. Same goes to an even larger degree for the .45. For your defense ammo I'd find a good 115 grainer in 9mm in CorBon or Hydrashok or Golden Sabre. It doesn't matter as much what you use for practice, though a fair amount of shooting with 115s is probably advisable in a cheaper load.
