ADDED NOTE: With about 80% of the votes counted, anti-gunner Helmke has conceded; Mark Souder has won by a landslide. Apparently this election received national press attention and is considered to be a re-confirmation of the continued importance of conservative values in the psyche of the American public.
John Carney's murderers are still at large. Apparently when he entered the liquor store and saw one of three black men pointing a gun at an employee's head, he threw the case of beer to distract the gunman from potentially firing. His 300 pound frame was probably imposing enough to get their attention once they heard the crash. His Glock .45 (don't know the model) failed to clear his holster; I don't know whether it discharged. But he was shot twice in the chest by the robbers who then fled, taking his weapon.
The most recent newspaper story about the incident includes information (which I called in) identifying him as an NRA rep for voter registration and ILA activities. The police have asked anyone with information to call the CrimeStoppers telephone number, meaning they probably do not have hot leads -- yet.
Meanwhile, the Primary voting took place today, the last local election in which Mr. Carney took an interest, the contest for the 3rd District Republican H.R. seat between pro-gun Mark Souder and rabidly anti-gun Paul Helmke.
Mr. Carney's last activities on behalf of gun owners in this region have very likely helped keep one extremely ambitious gun controller out of Congress. (The NRA sent at least two large mailings to every voter in the area and exposed Mr. Helmke's anti-gun record, including his interest in having the top job at Handgun Control Inc. Without that help, Helmke might have pulled more wool over more eyes.) Again, a tip of the hat to Mr. Carney and anything he may have done to help keep this Republican seat out of "the wrong hands."
