what is better in your opinion- a NEW "average" model rifle and scope, or a "high end" USED rifle, as example a NEW "Savage package" {basic rifle with simmons 3x9 scope} or a 80% USED remington mdl. 700 with a 3x9 leupold scope. the NEW rifle costs about $410 and the USED rifle is about $500. so whats the "better" deal in your opinion? thanks-jdb

What is the condition of the Remy you say 80%, is the bore and crown good? Are they the same caliber? Savage is making some very accurate rifles these days, but Simmons scopes are, well they're Simmons. Maybe buy the Savage, sell the scope and buy a used Leupold.

My opinion, buy both, do extensive field tests and make your decision. Then give me the one you decide against.

Consider this - the first time you pull the trigger on that 'new' rifle - it is USED.

BUY THE REMINGTON PACKAGE. FOR NO OTHER REASON EASER TO SELL WHEN YOU ARE READY FOR SOMETHING ELSE.

Assuming the used Remington is a sound rifle, my choice would be the Remington/Leupold. I've known too many guys that had ruined hunting trips with cheap scopes.

I prefer good used rifles to new ones. I can relax and not worry about putting a scratch on them.

By the way: the warranty on Leupold scopes extend to any owner--not necessairly the original owner. That used Leupold you are considering carries a full factory warranty (just a little side-note, and another reason to buy Leupolds).

I would go with the used as long as it isn't overused.
    used 3-9 vari xII
    $150.00
    used mounts and rings ----20.00
    used Rem rifle
    330.00

sounds like a good deal if it's a good shooter

I would pick the quality combo for the same reason people invest in antiques. They usually still work extremely well, you have a real asset as well as "pride of ownership," and you didn't have to settle for something you didn't truly want to own.

Obviously, I would give the used gun a once over and use a bore light to get a look down the barrel, but all things being equal, a quality gun lasts a very long time and ages gracefully into an heirloom.

I love lightly used, carefully used quality things almost more than new. They have value and character. I wasted too many years buying cheap junk just because it was all I could afford, from furniture to appliances. And yes, there was that Jennings Bryco .380.

I don't plan to do that any more if I can possibly help it. I've become a "collectible" man, if not an antique lover. No curios for me though, please. With rare exception, I want my guns in good shooting condition.
