Magnums

Okay, here's one for you. For a long time I have had an itch to get into a .44 magnum. I didn't really want a hunting gun or even a Dirty Harry gun. In fact, I was thinking for a while about a S&W 629 snubbie. Other guns I have considered include the LAR Grizzly in that chambering, and something in a .50 Action Express. I have never liked the Desert Eagles -- they're just bigger than necessary. Is the 50 AE a viable alternative to the 44 Magnum? Am I crazy to consider a snubbie in such a powerful round? My other favorite choice is a Mountain Gun. Assuming it might get some defensive carry, what are the recommendations of the group? Keep in mind I have not shot any .44 yet, at all (blush) but am not intimidated by recoil.A side note: Ayoob's latest article in G&A Handguns magazine on the scandium .357s is that at 18 oz. they may be too light for the .357 and many shooters found them decidedly unpleasant to shoot, even though their large frames apparently allow a 7-shot wheel.

first off, I am not a big person, and the Desert Eagle is manageable for me at 170lbs and 5'10". With the 10" barrel, the 50AE is a sweethart to shoot. The 44 is almost too easy in even a 6" barrel version of the Eagle. The Desert Eagle is HIGHLY EFFECTIVE at reducing felt recoil.I would personally never own a snub nosed 44 mag. That would have to be one of the worst recoils ever experienced, not to mention accuracy suffers. As far as standard 6" or 7" barrels, I would look into the ruger super redhawk in 44, 454, or 480 depending on your needs/wants. They are excellent built guns and at a reasonable price. Just my .02

I'm glad to hear about your experience of the .50AE in the Desert Eagle. I would make an exception regarding barrel length in that configuration.Obviously, I'd prefer the shortest practical barrel in the .44 Mag in a S&W. I do like the Mountain Gun concept (tapered underlug) quite a bit. I would probably not go as long as 6-7," I would stick closer to 4 or 5. But you do give me an interesting and attractive alternative in the Desert Eagle in the 50AE, considering that you describe it as a sweetheart, and the 44 mag as "almost too easy." What a concept! A user-friendly big bore magnum handgun. I'll take another look at the Desert Eagle, thanks. Anyone at all on the LAR Grizzly???
