Been out hunting tonight -freezing rain-sleet-snow. Had a spike buck in my cross-hairs for several minutes but let him go. I'm not sure if I was waiting for something bigger, or if it just reminded me of one of my teen-age sons.(oblivious of the world around them). Had a big buck show up, minutes after it was too dark for a safe shot.
I'll try it again about 5 in the morn. I think I must be crazy.

If he has $3-350 and needs a rifle and shot gun, check out New England Firearms, you can buy combo's that will give you the best of both worlds. They are single shot but I feel a single is a great way to start. He will stay under his price range and have two guns in one.

He could probley go higher to about 400-450 if needed. I dont know alot about rifles or shotguns so any info would be very helpful.

One more thing, there is really no such thing as a brush gun. The closest thing to that is a shotgun slug. This is a big arqument that has been going on forever and I feel the best way to do it is not shoot thru brush, only take a clear shot. If I catch my kids trying to "mow down brush" they will lose their hunting privelages. get a caliber that he is comfortable with, there are many out there and no single one is the best, if was was me I would get a .270 however that is my personl choice and a 20 guage for the birds, also a personal choice.[This message has been edited by 7mm nut (edited 03-29-2002).]

I would suggest a Remington 870 Combo. Either 12 or 20 Ga. This comes with a standard barrel for bird hunting and a rifled slug barrel for Deer. I live in a state where rifles are not allowed for deer hunting. This choice has served me well for almost 10 years. I purchased the same thing for my son a couple years back when he stated hunting with me.This choice will allow him to do both types of hunting until he is older and can afford what he really wants. JMHO...Good luck

Yep, those interchangeable barrel guns are great! As much as I like 7mm's choice (a lot!), it may be illegal in some places to hunt waterfowl with a double gun with one barrel being rifled. Not sure.I would also state that regardless of the weapon chosen, with a beginner, I would treat it as a single-shot. One shell at a time until proficiency and safety is fully demonstrated.

William has a good combo, not a bad choice for any short range shooting! Another might be a inexpensive 30-30 and a single shot shotgun. This is what I started with.

Im with 280man on this one. You should be able to get him a nice Marlin 30-30, and a Single shot for 350-375, or a Marlin 30-30, and a nice Mossberg Pump for about 450.

The only point I would add is that if he's already 16 or 17 he would outgrow the single shot too fast. At that age, might as well start him with a good pump. When I went out to buy my first shotgun, the dealers were touting the quality of Remington over Mossberg, but these days I assume they're about even. At one time, a lot of Mossbergs were sold with both a cylinder bore and rifled slug barrel included, a good deal considering an extra barrel may cost close to $100. I'd say buy a good quality pump shotgun and use slugs for deer and shot for birds. If I knew where you could get a 16-gauge I'd suggest looking into that chambering.
