I was looking through some old boxes and came across some American Rifleman and Shotgun News from the 50's-60's . The prices were so low on things I was depressed for hours. Win 70's 80.00 73's 45.00 , Colt SAA80.00. Thompson Drums 6.00 Oh for a time machine

Wipala.....I was thinking about that very thing the other day. 1 catch though. What would you buy stuff with. You couldn't use today's cash. Look at your paper money. It's dated 1995 or later. Folks in 1958 might think that a bit strange and have you arrested for counterfeiting. Take gold? Buy it on today's market for about $500 per ounce? Back then it was selling for $35 an ounce. Not a good trade-off. There's probably a simple sollution to the $$$ problem. I'll find the time machine and THEN worry about how to pay for stuff. But I know what you mean. Bought a 1st gen SAA in .38-40 for $65. Still have it. Bought a matching Winchester RIFLE for $125. Sold it for the same amount. Still kicking myself.Mudge the dreamer

Just dreaming about it, as for a time machinewho would need money if you had one just travel back in short hops trading your bills as you go. Or take a bunch of cheap dollar digital watches and calculaters back and sell them. Remember what a digital watch cost in the 70's

When you get that time machine built, I've got a little over $100.00 in pre 1963 dated bills stashed away. Find me a nice Winchester Low Wall in 25/20 single shot and you can keep the change.WOODS

Sure those prices look good today. In 1954 I was enlisted and making the princely sum of $72 a month and I certainly didn't have enough money for those bargains. I was lucky to have enough money for shaving cream and bath soap.I bought my first rifle in 1951, a model 94, for $50. At the time I was making 75 cents an hour and it took me a looonnnng time to save up for it. Today I can buy one a week if I care to.In 1950 a weeks groceries for a family of 5 cost $20 and a man working full time brought home $40.Don't wish for the "good old days". They were not nearly as good as today.

Maybe I could take an "old" 486 computer back in time and sell it to Bill Gates....

It's not all inflation. Not so long ago an Uzi cost $400 in most any configuration, and some of the more undesirable pistols were even less. Ergo, some of it also has to do with gun bans and owners and dealers getting "what the market will bear." I've got about a half dozen Glock 23 hi-cap mags that were worth $25 a couple years ago... Now I could sell them and buy myself another high-end gun. I dream of a place where we can buy certain guns for "what they're worth," i.e., manufacturer's retail. You know, we haven't had any significant inflation in this country for a number of years now... Prices have been stable for the most part for quite a while...
