i need to convince a person of the positive aspects of firearms, target shooting, and guns in general. he was raised in a house were his mother despised guns, and he doesn't care for them. i need to tell him the positive aspects of this sport so as to convince him to let me start target shooting at the local pistol club. the fate of my firearm future lies in your hands, GB forumers!

this IS a serious topic

    Hello, I have used this:

Guns don't kill people. There is not a single case where a gun loads itself, sets its own firing mechanism, aims itself, and releases its own sear. People are the key factor in gun crimes, actually, EVERY crime. Accidents do happen, but only becuase the owner let them happen. More people have been killed by Ted Kennedy's car than with my guns. They are for recreation, protection, and most of all an investment. My guns are safer than my car. I am safer than my guns. Even if they do malfunction, I am there to see to it that they are not going to harm any living thing unless I choose them to. And if someone enters my house with ill intentions, you are damn right they will kill, and fast.

Exactly who is this mystery man? If he is your father then you may well be dead in the water trying to change your old man's mind. If this fellow honestly dislikes firearms chance are you won't alter his opinions on guns no matter what information you provide about the postitive aspects of firearms ownership. You might try taking him to the local shooting club so that he can look around and see that it is (hopefully) filled with perfectly normal folks enjoying the sport. If they have a youth shooting program tell him you'd like to join to learn the safe aspects of firearms handling. If the range is typically filled with guys wearing shirts (usually two sizes too small) with such phrases as "Kill 'em all and let God sort them out" or "If you run, you'll only die tired" you'd be better served avoiding this idea...especially if that guy wearing one of those shirts is the youth shooting instructor!

In my own case, my mother happend to dislike firearms intensely (also motorcycles and fast cars) and I soon grew tired of arguing about this day and night for years with no movement towards my goals what so ever. My eventual solution to this brick wall named Mom was to simply let time run its course and then move out (25+ years ago). Now I own hundreds of guns, drive nothing but fast cars and ride even faster motorcyles and mom can't say a thing about it! The best thing about youth Chad is that you will out grow it!

The biathlon is an Olympic sporting event requiring precision rifle shooting. How can guns have no sporting significance?

There are plenty of us who get our kicks just punching holes in paper, learning to control recoil, taking guns apart the way some guys do motors, and listening to them go 'bang.' You could always to threaten to take up ballet lessons... [8D]
