L.A. police to get slicker, lighter guns
The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Police here will soon be able to carry a lighter and slicker weapon - the Glock pistol.
The Board of Police Commissioners on Tuesday approved the new weapons, which are already used in some specialized divisions.

"Quite frankly, it's just a much better weapon," than the standard-issue Beretta 9 mm, said Chief William Bratton during a hearing before the five-member civilian panel that oversees department policy.

About 70 percent of U.S. law enforcement agencies use Glocks, including the FBI and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Bratton, who headed the New York Police Department when it switched to Glocks in the 1990s, said the Beretta gun gave him blisters during his academy training in Los Angeles.

The $500 Glock has less recoil than guns currently used by officers. It also has a larger magazine capacity, a simpler construction and a more ergonomic design that allows officers with small hands to easily grip the gun, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The guns can take 9 mm, .40 caliber and .45 caliber ammunition.

The pistols are easier to use, but it's more difficult to trace the bullets fired from Glocks than other guns. Some departments have used a modified barrel in an effort to mark the bullets, but LAPD officials say that system is still untested.

I know there are some people who dont like Glocks but they are top of the line Duty Handguns. The LAPD is in process of a major over haul.Their swat team just converted to the Kimber 1911A1.Its just a matter of time until their Officers are all armed with a carbine of some sort.I hear Ruger, Bushmaster and HK is competeing for the Bid?

Why is it harder to get a bullet signature from a Glock than from other guns? I mean, flaws in the process aside, isn't it just a matter of barrels?

The rather smooth polygonal rifling doesn't leave as many identifiable marks on the bullet. Although manufacturing flaws might leave a mark the rifling would smudge the marks much like a smeared fingerprint is hard to identify.

Ugly gun but very reliable and likely the best pistol right "out of the box". Easy to train recruits and the price is right for city governments.
Been using a model 23 now for a couple years.

Chief William Bratton is really on top of things! Sounds like the last time he fired a gun was back in the academy.

I sure like mine... I do wish it had a smoother trigger (even though I put a kit in it to lower it to ~ 3 pounds).

I'd just like to know how you get a blister from a Beretta 92. Anybody know?

Just found out my new G30 has the 3 lb. connector installed. Couldn't be happier. I wouldn't be surprised if more LAPD choose the bigger bores if they get a choice of cartridges. They will find them lighter and more comfortable to carry all day as well as to shoot, I think.
