If anybody is on line RIGHT NOW [This was Monday night] you could help me test a chat room by going to the following URL and seeing if you can log into my realtime chat room. I'll either see you there, or you can post a response telling me what happened when you tried it. If it works, put the link in your Favorites folder so you can get to it again later if we set up a regular meeting time. Here's the link:

    "For members only..."

I applied to "join the community" and will receive an email from the "community manager" if he/she decides to allow me to join.

Sounds like I might end-up like "The Prisoner". "YOU are Number Six." "I AM NOT A NUMBER; I AM A FREE MAN!"

FEAR NOT, I AM the community manager. [NOTE: The chat room is a private "Members Only" room, which actually is an advantage. Those who click these links will receive an invitation to join, or you can send me e-mail with your e-mail address and GB handle and I'll add you to my invitation list]:

I have tried both links. It still indicates "Members Only"...

    "members only" again

still have to get "approval" from that "community manager"--something tells me he/she won't like guys with guns!

I'M THE MANAGER. GB members in good standing will be welcomed. "Mistakes" will be corrected rapidly, or as the French say, "rapidement!"

You should have received my request to join then. And probably have to send me an email response.

Never messed with MSN chat--everything with MSN is too convoluted; Yahoo chat is easier.

    No more time here tonight...

Okay, here's the thing: The Chat room is for "members" of my community only, which could actually be a good thing. Anyone who'd like to go into the chat room give me your e-mail address and I'll send you an "invitation." I checked my e-mail and nobody's request has been received, so if I send you all invitations you should be able to access the Chat Room. Which I will then reserve for us gun dudes to talk whenever we want. So I need e-mail addresses, one way or another.

    competent --
I just happen to have MSN as my ISP so the site and the chat room are mine for free. I figure if we can access it as easily as using a URL in our browser (which may cause a little piece of chat software to autoload, no big deal) then this would be the simplest way to get a chat room going without using any other software. I'll be happy to collect e-mail addresses from anyone interested in trying it (no other use will be made of them) and make you "members" of the chat room. That should allow you to access realtime chat by using the link I gave you. Simple, once it's set up. After you finally get into the chat room, click the Add to Favorites button to save the chat room link so you can get back to it easily. At least, that's the theory....

The first couple of invitations have been mailed out. They contain a link which should (!) get the job done. I'm flying on a wing and a prayer here, but I think it's working....

Our first chat had 4 participants. I'll keep taking e-mails and sending invitations. Everybody seems to be able to get on without problems. We'll probably chat again tomorrow (Tuesday) earlier in the evening. At a more sensible hour, oui? Anyone interested can send me your email, I'll "invite" you to become a member, and you can log onto the chat room using your Gunbroker handle too. I don't even think I need to be logged on for you to use the chat room guys so feel free to head over there any time after you get signed up. Hey, it's a place to start, and we've needed a chat room.

    CHAT ROOM FAQ:
Bringing this back to the top for the benefit of those interested in tonight's chat attempt. I "own" this chat room as part of my MSN account, and it has been going to waste before now, so it's available for our use and we've already proven that it's easy to use. I need your e-mail address to send you an invitation. This only needs to be done once. You will then be on the members list from now on for future chats.

You can ask to be invited by going to the following link if you prefer not to post your e-mail address on here (I understand!). Or you can write me e-mail and I will send you an "engraved" invitation. Please log on using your same GB handle (ID), for simplicity's sake. This is members only chat for pro 2nd Amendment folks to enjoy company & conversation, period. I can easily ban with one stroke any saboteurs, so fear not. Besides, hackers will be messing with Microsoft, not me, and they have very deep legal pockets. Here's the link. Last night's chat had 5 GB participants already and went for an hour:

    http://communities.msn.com/StevenTowsley/chat.msnw#

Note: I'm having supper with Mom & Dad this evening so I will arrive back here to start sometime around 7 or 8 (8 or 9 Eastern). I'll make it as early as possible and keep the room going as long as possible myself. I will also make sure to update everyone's requests to join, if any arrive last-minute.

We had fun last night. I think you will get a kick out of it. Note: There are protections built in though if everyone plays nice we won't ever need them.

Please don't construe this as competing with GB messages. That is not my intent at all. This is just a way of doing realtime talk now and then. I'm open to a better idea, but as I said this private chat room was going to waste until now and it worked ideally for us last night. Once you're signed up, as far as I know any of you who are members can enter the room anytime whether I'm present or not. Feel free. I believe this will work with any browser, though you may see an indicator that your browser is installing its chat SW on first use. That would be normal. The chat room also supports smilies and such.
