Yep, happened to one of our yellow lab drug dogs at about age 8. She went on three until she finally had to be put down.

Better get a radiation meter working and take a few readings were that dog lives , or see if someone gave him a depleted uranium shell as a toy ......

Some breeds are prone to some diseases, but I have no idea whether a lab is more likely to get cancer at a young age. All you can do is support the friend until the test results are in. Hopefully the dog can have treatment and go into remission, or at the very least a quality life at home until the time comes. I'm not one to put a dog down as long as it seems happy at home, even if it doesn't get around as well, as long as it's not in much pain. Dogs show pain and weakness about the same way at times -- reluctance to move around. I find that if they go off to hide in a corner or under a table it's probably pain. If it's pain and not too serious, an aspirin should help. If it's weakness from illness, of course, painkillers won't help at all. I wish your friend all the best. My dog is 5 and I hope she sticks around a good long time.
