Not only that, if you want to use Avid for video editing or Maya for animation (I hear the Resident Evil movie used it), you can get it for your home computer-- but they won't run on "Me" because it's not NT-based. If you want to be a home Spielberg you need to get to an NT-based Windows system. If only I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have dropped over two grand on a Sony VAIO with a 19" Sony monitor -- and Windows Me for an OS. Crap! If only people hadn't started giving XP a bad rap early on....

Took 1990's advise and went to system configuration utility. There was six items and I un-checked three that I knew and it made no difference at all. What drives me nuts is those three little blue squares running across the screen! I counted them and they went across 24 times! I think I will leave it alone before I screw it up. I don't know 1% of what most of you know about computers. Thanks for all the advise, Rosie
NOW WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET A GOOD FIGHT STARTED!!?

Rosie, I have to follow up with J & C's question. Was it a fresh install or an upgrade. If you did an upgrade you probably inherited a bunch of problems from the old WIN9x install. In that case the best bet is to make sure you have a good backup of your data and profiles, fdisk the hard disk and install XP on a clean disk. You can then reload your data files and your bookmarks from your profile so you don't lose this forum.

Sounds like you could use some professional help with that process, or if it isn't too bad a problem, then you will have to live with it. If it is old 9x stuff, it will probably get worse before it gets better.

THere's no need to live with it, but you could use a visit from a techie. If you don't know anyone who can drop in, you can take just the box into the shop, maybe Best Buy or someplace with a service counter. They'll hook it up to a monitor and keyboard and start it up, check some settings for you and probably be able to diagnose and maybe fix it on the spot. Take along any CDs or other disks you have that came with the system, particularly Windows operating system and application disks.

This is one of the companys old computers and what I did on a couple of them I just installed the hard drive as a slave on another computer, formatted and installed 98 that I had around here. Think I will do the same with this one. 280! putem up! putem up!!

You put XP PRO on an old computer? Aghhh! No wonder it's a slow loader; it's probably swapping to virtual memory just to start up.... I should've asked how much RAM you got on that thing.... You're going to need 32 just to run 98v2 on it, minimum. More for anything newer. Tsk, tsk.
