Ok, my wife wants a camcorder to take pictures of the baby. I looked at some and now I don't know where to start. Any suggestions on good ones to buy. Please be specific with model number not just brand. THANKS

Check out the Canon Elura 40MC...I have used the Elura 20MC(the 40MC is the new model) and its awsome. The picture and sound are great and it is the size of a standard 35mm camera. Here's the link:

I have a Sony TVR-730 digital 8mm camcorder. I LOVE it. Many manufacturers are also offering pure digitial camcorders now too, those are even better. Everything I have owned by Sony has been of good quality. My $0.02.

You don't need a model number. Anything in the Sony or Canon or Panasonic brand will serve your needs for close-ups, good zooms, good sound, good color, and so forth. Mostly, you need to ask to look at one in your price range and have a knowledgable clerk explain the features to you. Most modern cameras have so many you'll be delighted.

The model number will depend upon whether you want the older but cheaper Hi-8 tape, or digital recording. You should also give some thought to how you want to view the movies -- on your computer, or transfering to your VCR for viewing on TV, or both. Also, you will probably want a videocam that can take digital still pictures so you can e-mail photos to friends and family. Most digital videocams can now take still pictures as well. If not, software can capture stills from digital movies on your PC or Mac.

If you're going to leave your computer out of it and plan to shoot movies to go direct to VCR, you could use the Hi-8 format. The cameras are now $300 or less. But otherwise, Hi-8 is being replaced by digital, so I'd get the digital and pay a little more if necessary.

Personally, I have a Panasonic Mini-DV Palmcorder (it records on digital tapes) with PCM stereo sound, a 2.5" color monitor screen, dual EIS, an I-Link for sending movies to my computer, and 18x optical and 300x digital zoom and a 680K CCD (but it's not this year's model so the model number, and features, have been surpassed by something better by now). If you want super clear still pictures you'll want to go higher than a 680K CCD.
