Just placed my first GB auction as a seller

I have bought a few things, including one very nice Star PD, but I just put up my first auction as a Seller on GB.

http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=4116939

Feedback and suggestions welcome. I'm a pretty good (trained) photographer, and I know how to create a collage in Photoshop so I don't have to load 4 or 5 photos, which is a convenience.

I found the interface to be very friendly with one exception -- it says if you need to make changes press your Back button, but when I did that I got an order to "refresh," which gave me a blank auction page. So I used the Forward button, posted my auction, and made my minor changes there after it was up and running, which worked fine. They do need Make Changes or Continue Editing button that will insure holding your data though.

Nice looking ad offeror. If I had a use, might would bid. But since I'm not a cop or lefthanded, oh well.
The only constructive comment I would make: go ahead and give a shipping figure. Holster would go USPS Priority for the 3 lb rate most likely and the PO will even give you a box. Add 40 cents for delivery confirmation and your total anywhere in the US (Alaska and Hawaii included) is $5.60.

Welp, I think US Priority is $3.50 to $4.00 with a free box, I couldn't remember what delivery confirmation would be. Doing the math ahead of time gives me a headache. Of course you can't get delivery confirmation cheap with First Class. But you're right of course. I should generally just give a figure and stick to it. Thanks a lot for the FB.

Heck I'll buy that gun and holster for forty bucks and you won't have to ship it. I have to go to Fort Wayne tomorrow.

    Andy --
I'm quite experienced with transactions on eBay, so I will be handling every item with care over here as well. My background is in collectibles, movie memorabilia, even antiques over there, so I deal with people who expect to be treated well and have each item treated well. I'm not into the mass marketing mentality. Although I have found Shooting Star software to be well worth the $50 if you do a lot of eBay auctions. It writes personalized correspondence for you and keeps you abreast of every stage. If you manually enter GB auctions, it will do the same in terms of taking you through the stages and sending e-mails, without that impersonal "e-bot" feel. Anyway, I'm off and running over here now, though I don't expect I'll be doing volume (unless somebody wants to train me in getting rich in the gun business via mail order on GB)...!

The least expensive way to ship is to use the post office. If you can, stop in and get a supply of US Priority boxes at your local branch. They're free boxes. Since you as a seller will then be selling only to people who supply you with copies of current FFLs, you can mail your item to an FFL address even if it's a firearm. Obviously, if it isn't a firearm, say it's a holster, you don't need a copy of an FFL and you can easily mail First Class or Priority. I like Priority because of the free boxes. Save your old newspapers and you've got great padding too. Of course, you'll either have to get a postal scale so you can apply correct postage and mail from your house, or drive the packages into the local PO branch so they can weigh them and charge the correct postage there.

Great looking auction. But I didn't see the grade 6 browning I was looking for. Oh well maybe the next time you will have that.

If you ain't got pictures, I wasn't there.

You can order boxes online to be delivered right to your home. Here is the address.http://supplies.usps.gov/disclaimer.htmAlso you can get delivery confirmation online at no charge, you just have to print it out. Here is that addresshttp://www.usps.com/cgi-bin/api/shipping_label.htmAfter the auction ends, when you send the winning bidder your notice, make sure that you give them a specified amount of time to send money. Also your computer is set to view every page as new every time you visit the page. That is why you lost all the information when you went back to revise the auction. You can set your computer to view a page as new every time you start your computer, not every visit. That way when you go back to a page it is still the same. This does cause problems if you WANT to see what has been updated on the page. Like when you want to see an update on a thread here. You have to refresh all the time.

If I knew then, what I know now.

I use two 39" tubes to ship guns. They are triangular in cross-section. Put them together to make a rectangle instead. Long enough to take most guns when taken down.

When I had to ship a shotgun, I went to the rear of a gun store and took a box out of the trash.

You are absolutely right about my "refresh every page visit" setting. I had once thought it was a better way to go, but I just changed it. I'll try it this way for a while and see if I like it better after all.

    Nunn --
Great idea about the triangular Priority tubes. Cutting two together should be a fairly simple way to get the job done. I find myself butchering boxes for an odd-sized item every now and then. This will be easy by comparison.

Offeror - Your listing is too wordy. Just state condition, color, and what gun it fits, and any special terms of sale. One photo will do. Reference website if buyer needs more info.

Keep it brief and to the point. Including your phone number is always a good thing if the potential buyer wants to call.

BTW, the pictures did not load on my computer. Reduce pixel level to standard quality. That is sufficient for this site and does not take up so much band width.

    Just my 2 cents

I have used the triangle boxes alot of times to ship rifles. Most rifles will not fit into the box whole. Like nunn said. I state in my auction description that the stock will be taken off for shipping purposes. It is usually just a matter of a screw or 3 to put it back on. And sometimes the scope. Then when you put them in the box wrapped in bubbles it has a nice tight fit. Have not had a complaint yet. Then again you can run into one like the 303 I just sold. It was way to much trouble to take the stock off, so I had to break down and get a non postal box that it would fit into. I have cut up alot of different sized postal boxes to make them fit the item I am shipping. To save the buyer on weight/shipping charges. The post office does not care as long as they are making their $3.50, soon to be $3.85.By the way I agree with boomerang, most people just want the facts. Just the facts. LOL

Normally I would have written a much shorter ad, but the Grabber is such a unique and hard to describe pro holster that I decided to reproduce several paragraphs from the manual in order to explain how it was made and how it worked. You are right though, some probably want the info and some don't like to read that much. As for the photo, Netscape has the slowest and most unreliable loading of any big website provider I may have ever used. The pic is optimized for the web, and not very big. If it won't load, it's because the Netscape servers were overloaded when you tapped them. Press refresh a time or two and you can probably see the pic. (There's only one, reproduced at top and bottom). Netscape used to be okay, until AOL got ahold of them. Now you can't FTP files anymore and the interface is either a) severely overloaded, or b) junk. I'm looking for a new free website where I can FTP, and not have visitors viewing pop-ups. They're getting harder to find.
