Alaska or middle east? I was listening to a debate and I did not hear a good reason to keep buying from the middle east. Wonder what yall think.

I think it's very imperative we set up drilling in Alaska.
I know some will disagree, but, if we don't quit depending on foreign oil, we are going to be in a fix. It would take years to get the oil pumping in Alaska and by that time our economy could be ruined.
I love the beautiful sites in Alaska, but that won't matter when I can't afford to buy gas and won't have a job to pay for it.

ooooh! That is sooo right daddo! Nailed my thought. Also, the more we buy from the mid-east, the more we help them buy the bombs they make, and give money to the families of the suicide bombers families.
    Just my 2 cents.

There is one point I forgot to state, is that, they need us to buy their oil as (if my right) the US consumes most of it. Where else would we go though, if they raised prices?

There is plenty of oil in the Gulf to last a lonnnnnnnnng time. No need to drill in Alaska.

We are using up the oil in the Middle east first, then we'll use ours. Good idea, I suppose.

Mexico has a HUUUUUUUGE amount of oil, too. We can always take that. :)

Totally agree with "daddo". If we do not start preparing to drill in our reserves, ie: Alaska, we will again find ourselves behind the 'eight ball' if foreign product is not available.

I'm for drilling off the Gulf Coast of FL. My wife's family used to own some of the drilling rights. The State of FL sold the rights, then told them they couldn't drill. The lawsuits from that are still going on 50 years later.

I almost forgot to add: There are some "crackpot" theories about the formation of the solar system that aren't widely accepted, but according to those theories, if you drill deeply enough anywhere, you will hit oil. The theory says there is more oil in the earth than we could possibly use in 1,000,000 years at the current rate and that it didn't come from dinosaurs and other biomass but was left over from the creation of the solar system.

I order scented edible oil off the web. Comes in a plain package. Real good stuff. Don't think it comes from the mideast.

    I think....
Next time we have to go into Iraq, and it won't be long, we tell our Saudi friends "Okay, you wouldn't do anything to help so here we come".

We take the Iraq oil. It's ours. We ship it home. Tell the Iraq people, we will build you schools and hospitals, take care of your welfare, but just go sit in a corner and shut up. ITS OURS! Paid for with the blood of our troops. And then we tell the Oil companies, the price of gas is say 50 cents a gallon. NO MORE! The government uses that revenue to pay for the upkeep of Iraq.

Oh yes...then we tell the Saudis.....UP YOURS!

Like in the NFL, defense is the key.

Screw oil. There are some very promising new technologies being developed, in particular Hydrogen fuel cells, which run off of ordinary hydrogen... there is virtually unlimited amounts of the stuff in the air and oceans, all we need is an effective way to reclaim it (the dipole bond of O and H in H20 is very strong so water is not a viable fuel source currently and thus the hang up). Coupled with hybrid gas/electric cars, our oil requirements would be dropped to where domestic sources could once again fill them and we could tell the Arabs to eat their oil. 10 years, mark my words, and you'll see fuel cell cars as an every day occurrence.

"RICKSTIR"- I remember when Nazi-Germany had the same idea.
"jonk"-- Even if fuel cell vehicles come into affect in the next 10 years and are afforable and sold exclusively, it would be another 10+ years before the general populace owned one. Remember- it take oil to make the vehicles and lubricate them, work trucks that haul loads of anykind would still run on gas/oil, not to count the thousands of products that depend on oil for manufacturing and operating. How much oil products are used in the making of a cell? What do we do with the waste product of a cell? Another polluting idea. Without oil, the squeeky wheel would get no grease.
Things will change in the future as far as our dependency on oil, but it will be a long time.

    Pelican --
The edible oil that warms to the touch is really good, but watch out, I once met a very nice blonde who let me cover her with it and suddenly had an allergic reaction -- she wound up standing in the shower until the effects wore off...
