Is it a good thing? What does it do? Where do you get it? How do you know if you need it?

I have used it to buy stuff here and to sell stuff on eBay (none of the GB staff are gun dealers to avoid conflicts of interest over competing with our sellers and with feedback). As a buyer's tool it is nice but the My Auctions pages do most of what you need.
As a seller's tool, however, it is terrific. It finds and adds any new listings you create to its tracking list and when the auction closes it keeps track of what sold and what did not. It has columns where you can keep track of what you quoted for shipping. Plus it will automatically generate email to the buyer at the end of the auction and will let you generate various reminder emails. It has a good feedback capability as well.
When I sell stuff it is a hassle to keep track of more than 10-20 auctions, between who paid, who has not paid, what has been shipped, who has been contacted, people who are deadbeats, what you need to request credit for, etc. AuctionTamer really helps get you organized.
If you are selling 1 or 2 items a month it is probably not worth it to use any tools other than what the site provides. If you are selling 10-20 items per month you will most likely find it a valuable tool for managing the post-sale process.
You can download a copy and use it free for 14 days to see if it makes your life easier. They have various purchase plans but the $70/yr ($5.75/month) seems pretty reasonable to me.
To download the 14 day trial click the banner from the GB home page (if you dont see it, click Refresh until it comes up). That takes you to their home page. Then click the 'Click here to download AuctionTamer' link to download your copy.
So that you know I/GB are not endorsing it for financial gain: Neither I nor GunBroker make any money from AuctionTamer. We think it makes the seller's life easier by helping you sell more with less effort and that is why GB did the development work and gives them the ad space free of charge.
The only problem I have encountered is that it does not like auction items over $999. It drops the first digit on all auto emails, etc., so my buyer gets "Congratulations, you've won auction number whatever for only $299" when the actual price is $1,299. Of course, I get the return email "What a discount! I'll take ten!" but it straightens out pretty quickly.
I've emailed their support staff, but so far zilch.
