Do any of you have problems with those pesky gray box pop-up that look so official, saying basically if you want to get rid of this sort of pop-up, you have to subscribe to our service? Have any of you figured out a different pop-up killer that can eliminate them?

boeboe, try "Pop-Up Killer" - it's shareware and does a good job.

If the "popups" say "messenger service" or anything about windwows messenger then you need to run services.msc and disable the processes run-mode. Or, you can run your internect connection through a router or install a firewall software. I think Offeror has outlined the messenger process a few times, so you can search for his posts if you're confused.

Spectre7 is right... Check to see if it is a messenger pop-up, if not and it is still happening, try http://bambihunter.myftp.org/files/PopUpStopper26.exe. That is what I use and it is an old shareware version that worked so well I never saw the need to upgrade when they released the new (non-shareware) versions. Just make sure to enable "aggressive popup control" under preferences. They no longer host this version, I have it and you're welcome to get it from me (via the link above)

You need a better popup stopper, like Pop-Up Stopper Free Edition. You can download it from Kim Komando's website. You should also consider a spyware eliminator like Spy-Bot, also I think on the Komando site. Since I installed those two, I have had no popups, and the computer has run better after getting rid of all the spyware.

It's not a popup. It's somebody on the internet mis-using your Windows Messenger Service, as was suggested above. You can either DISABLE the service altogether, or start up your Windows Internet Firewall (in XP) to eliminate ad input using Messenger Service.
