SF Police Search for Carjacker With Officer's Gun
6/14/02
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) -- San Francisco police are working on a composite sketch of a man who stole an officer's gun early this morning, then escaped by carjacking a taxicab in the inner Mission District.

The suspect is described as a man of possibly Hispanic or Middle Eastern descent around 30 to 35 years old, with dark skin and short, black wavy hair and a thin mustache. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, which may have red writing on its front, and blue jeans.

Lt. Henry Hunter, of the police General Works unit, said the drawing would be released as quickly as possible.

As of 11:30 a.m., investigators said they have not apprehended the man who made off with the .40-caliber Beretta pistol of an officer assigned to the Mission Station around 4:45 a.m. The officer was part of a team searching for someone who stole and crashed a van near 16th and Wiese streets when he tangled with that suspect.

According to the police report, the suspect first told Officer Robert Greiner that the man he was looking for "went that way,'' then tried to walk away himself. Greiner said he followed and ordered the man to the ground but the suspect refused, cursing at him and calling out "Kill me'' as he climbed over a fence.

What followed as the officer caught up with him and struggled, the report said, is that somehow the suspect got Greiner's gun and turned it on the officer, threatening his life. "Don't make me do it,'' the suspect said.

Greiner tried to pursue the suspect on foot, but could not detain him and soon afterward saw the escaping fugitive hop into the front passenger's seat of a passing De Soto cab on Mission Street nearby. But within a short while the driver, noticing how nervous his fare seemed as police cars appeared in the area, slammed on the brakes, jumped out of the car and got away safely.

The damaged De Soto cab was discovered abandoned at 10th and Stevenson streets later on, after the suspect apparently crashed it and set off on foot.

Despite efforts to pursue and nab the suspect, he got away.

Police officers at Mission Station are still reeling from the death of one of their own and injury of three others Wednesday night when two squad cars collided while headed toward a report of a domestic violence fugitive being spotted in the Castro District. Memorial services for Officer Jon C. Cook are scheduled over the next few days.

Cop loses gun in courthouse Courthouse locked down while deputies search unsuccessfully for weapon

    JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

The Genesee County Circuit courthouse was locked down Thursday morning after a Flint police officer lost his gun in a bathroom.

    Information from Our Advertisers

The gun, a .32-caliber pistol, still is missing.

The narcotics sergeant took the gun off about 9 a.m. to use the restroom but didn't realize until 90 minutes later that he had left the gun behind.

The building was locked down while deputies unsuccessfully looked for the gun. It was reopened after the search.

The incident has raised the ire of some court officials, who believe that officers who take a weapon into the building should be responsible enough to know its whereabouts. On-duty officers are allowed to take weapons into the building.

"I consider it a serious breach of his responsibility," said Barbara A. Menear, administrator of the Genesee County Circuit Court. "That puts everyone in jeopardy."

Genesee Circuit Judge Richard B. Yuille, chief judge pro-tem of the court, agreed.

"At any given time, there are a number of children and others in this building who do not have the same concerns for safety as those of us who work here do," he said.

Menear said the officer, whom she and others declined to identify, was a witness in a criminal case on the court's third floor.

She said when he realized the weapon was missing about 10:30 a.m, he raced to the restroom but was unable to find the weapon. He alerted Genesee County Sheriff's Department deputies, who provide security for the building.

"The building was essentially locked down to prevent anyone from coming in or going out," Menear said.

Deputies searched the building to determine if the weapon was still inside.

"It was not found," Menear said, adding all the judges were notified of the incident.

There was only one jury present and no one in the jury pool awaiting a case. But Menear said there were about 150 people in the courthouse, not counting staff.

Genesee County Sheriff Robert J. Pickell said the officer had a right to be carrying a weapon.

"My concern is that he was on duty and had a right to be armed," he said. "We have a good policy, and this is the first time I know of something like this happening," Pickell said.

He said he will forward a report to the Flint Police Department and let it handle any follow-up.

"I have confidence Chief (Brad) Barksdale will handle this internally," Pickell said.

Barksdale was unaware of the incident when contacted by the Journal Thursday night but said he will investigate.

Menear and Yuille, however, said the court policy may need further review.

On Thursday, Menear issued a new policy that requires groups visiting the court to report in at the information desk. She said that will allow court officials to know if classes of students or other groups are there, how many are there and where they are.

The policy allowing officers to carry weapons into the court also will be reviewed.

FAMILY TO FACE COPS WHO SHOT THEIR DAD

THE family of an innocent Scot shot dead by bungling police will face his killers for the first time tomorrow.

Harry Stanley, 46, was hit outside his house by two marksmen who had been told the table leg he was carrying was a shotgun.

His family will meet the two police gunmen for the first time at an inquest.

Mr Stanley's son Jason, 29, said yesterday: "I want to hear what the police said happened that night. I want to come face to face with them. I don't even know their names."

Mr Stanley's other son Jamie, 21, and Charlene, 19, will also attend the inquest, with their mum Irene, 46.

Mr Stanley, who was born in Bellshill, Glasgow, was shot in the hand and head after he left a pub in Hackney, London, in September 1999. The grandfather was killed instantly.

Police had received a tip-off claiming the painter and decorator was armed with a sawn-off shotgun.

Mr Stanley's neice Eva, 31, said: "We just want the two officers to admit what they did was wrong, but the police have covered up for them.

"Police officers should operate a shoot to maim, not shoot to kill, policy. They should use stun guns or plastic pellets and not real bullets."

The inquest will begin at St Pancras Coroner's Court, London, tomorrow.

I being a policeman DO NOT agree that only we should have guns. There are some cops out there who I feel would like to punch my ticket if they got the chance. Now that would truly be a police state if it were the case.

    "The damaged De Soto cab...?????"

Was De Soto the name of the cab company or was the cab actually a De Soto automobile? I think the last De Sotos were manufactured in about 1957.

In my opinion the officer that lost his gun should be fired. There is no doubt it was a reckless and stupid thing to do.Being an officer my self I know Police Officers are human and subject to mistake. But when something like this happens (the court room incident) it makes the public mistrust all of us and thats not the case. This guy never would have made it out of the academy in VA. for it seems he is not very smart. The other day I had a stranger ask me if I believed law abiding citizens should be issued ccw permits. I quickly answered no I dont,he didnt look a bit surprised until I said law abiding citizens should not have to have a permit to exercise their rights. I explained what I meant in VA thank God we have the right to carry concealed, but it cost about $40.00 bucks to obtain it. I wish all law abiding U.S. citizens had a ccw it sure makes my job easier. The felons strike less often because they dont know who is packing.

What I'd like to know is who got a close look at an old man with a table leg and called it in as a man with sawed-off shotgun. That's who they should be mad at. Anyway, that's who I'D be looking for...
