My Shar Pei had a seizure yesterday

Got to take care of my baby, so I rushed her down to the vet hospital, by which time she had come out of it. Clean blood tests. They say she might be epileptic, but I got on the internet when I got home and you'd be surprised how much info there is on Google on dogs with seizures. She had her booster shots on Tuesday along with one of those new six-month heartworm shots. Turns out it is possible for heartworm medication to produce a seizure up to 1 1/2 weeks after administration. The dumb vet didn't mention that. Anyhow, I'm going to take a wait and see attitude, but I'll bet she had a delayed reaction to medication. Strange thing, seizure. Her front legs went straight out, her toes were all splayed out, then her back legs went straight out behind. It was tough to watch. The monthly heartworm dose never did that to her, so we may be back on the monthlies in six months if it turns out she has no more of these seizures in the meantime.

I once had a boxer mix that had epilepsy. Used to have a fit a couple times a year. They'd last 5 or 10 minutes and then he'd be fine. The vet said it was nothing to worry about, they can live with it just the same as people can.

I have 10 dogs and have been through all sorts of problems , i have a shar pei tp(wrumples)eye lid problems with her and shar pei fever!
also have a pom(viscious vinny)who has seizures too about 3 times a year doc says to wait till it gets worse before putting him on meds
so the wait and see is a good idea, watching your dog flip and shake on the floor is hard to watch!hope all is well!

I like that name "Wrumples," very clever. All Shar Peis have the eye lids to deal with, as you know. Never heard of Shar Pei fever though. Mine's had all her shots, and her normal temp is 102. Her seizure was odd -- she just stood there on all fours, all spread out and legs stretched, standing still and holding on stoically against whatever she was feeling. She only convulsed just slightly, making me think she might be going to throw up, but she didn't. I've been able to eliminate a few of the possibilities by the symptoms alone. I think maybe she reacted to the new 6-month heartworm shot. We'll see if there's a repeat. Doc said it might never happen again. I'm going to change her diet a bit and do what I can to make her less vulnerable. Thanks for everyone's comments. Now I know it looks worse than it is.

Our Chinese Crested started seizures last December, a lot worse than what you went through, where he would lose consciousness and temporarily didn't know anyone but my wife when he came out of it. The blood tests came back negative. The vet put him on phenobarbital, two pills a day. That got rid of the problem, but he started to put on weight and he acted sluggish. So against the vet's recommendation, we backed him off to one pill a day, then half. After he had no seizures for months, we went to nothing, but a couple weeks ago he had a mild one with the stiff legs like you describe, only he flopped on his side. So we're back to half a pill a day. I'm not saying you should do what we are doing, just giving you my experience.

Wrumples has had 2 surguries on each eye lid, and needs them again,
we go to a vet who specializes in shar-pei and even said he has one other who has needed this much eye work!Lucky us huh!as far as the fever goes some shar-pei get a extremley high fever for no reason!
she used to get a fever once or twice a year, and wrumples gets it about every other month to every month!doctor says she should be dead with the high temps she gets, but her body has adjusted to being a hot asian girl!LOL

Yes, my Shar Pei had her eyes "tacked" open with stitches as a babe, and when she was a year old (skull fully formed) she had eye surgeries to open them properly. Up until then she was a squinter all the time and frequently walked into walls because she tried to get around with her eyes shut. Now, as you can see by the pic in another thread, her eyes are good, except that occasionally she gets one irritated. I'm holding off on another surgery until we see how chronic it is. Meanwhile, we get ointment and treat it that way for a few days. Oh, what the heck, I'll run the pic here too for those who don't read the other thread:
