Inventor of Uzi submachine gun dies in United States at 79
Jerusalem-AP -- The inventor of the Uzi submachine gun has died.
Family members say Uzi Gal died in Philadelphia over the weekend after a long illness. He was 79. He will be buried in Israel, where his family fled after Adolf Hitler came to power in their native Germany.
The Uzi submachine gun was invented in the 1950s and used by the Israeli army for the first time during its Sinai campaign in 1956. It has became a mainstay of secret services from Jerusalem to Washington.
In recent years, Gal was developing a new type of pistol that was to be marketed in the United States. An Israeli newspaper said the new weapon was to "create a revolution in the international weapons market."
