Modem problems

I am having problems with my modem. It doesn't matter what site i'm on. Everything is working fine, then I get a pause for 20-30 seconds. Nothing is sent, or recieved. I look at my icons, and see nothing happening. Then all of a sudden, everything is working fine again. I used this modem with xp, and it worked fine. I'm using me now. I have too many programs, hardware that are not compatible with xp, so I re-installed the me software. The modem came with me drivers, and I'm using them. I think its the me software. I'm using a agree modem, Lucent winmodem. If I have a major download, no problems, no pauses. It's only when I stop clicking for 5 or more seconds, I get this major pause. I had this problem from a clean full install, with only the modem, and me software alone. It's not a "add in" software problem, or virus problem. I have every me software patch installed, and I'm using Explorer 6.0. I can usually figure out all of my computer problems, this one really has me stumped.

I'm glad to hear you have every patch installed, because there is a patch for the Lucent modem you and I both apparently have. Are you sure it's the modem? Usually, when things stop like that for me it's because the computer RAM is maxed out doing another task or hung up on an application on my computer. If you had Norton Utilities, you could run WinDoctor and clean things up a bit. You might also try hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del and see if any of your apps has stopped responding during that period. I have trouble with an item in my system tray locking up sometimes, and it will stop things cold until I hit "End task." You might check www.windowsupdate.com for modem drivers and be sure you have the latest Lucent driver, in case you missed it. I'm not sure that one comes up automatically; you may have to do a search.

Also, you can check your driver by going into your Control Panels to System, selecting Device Manager, and look for the Modem driver. If there's an exclamation point to the left of it, it has been corrupted, and should be deleted. Your computer will then recognize your modem as new hardware and ask for the driver to be freshly installed. You can also click on Properties and see your driver file details. My Lucent Win Modem driver is version 4.90.3000, and I'm on Windows Me, also.

Nortan, yes I have. Antivirus 2022 and systemworks. The c a d, has nothing unusual. Like I said, I was having this problem with a clean install. I have the latest drivers for the modem. I do think it is something in the backround in me. I have all "autoupdate" off. I also have 256k of rdram, and a p4 1.9 gig chip.
I had to turn off my puter to check the version of the driver, it is
    4.90.3000

Well, one other thing you can try is talking to the modem itself. Open Hyperterminal in your Accessories folder. Type "AT." The modem should respond with OK. Type AT&F and the modem should again respond OK, having checked its settings. I believe the command to reset to factory settings is "ATZ" so try that as well. It should again respond "OK." If the modem works better after you did that than it did before, then maybe your ISP dial-up software is changing the settings when it initializes and dials.

Also, if you have call waiting, be sure to put *70, in front of your dial-up ISP number to disable it. Otherwise the interruption could be a call waiting tone.

I haven't seen a clean install of an operating system in a long time. It probably is related to your "falling back" to Me from XP, one way or another. Personally, I'd like to upgrade my Sony VAIO to XP; I hear Me is less stable. The same computer nerds who were scoffing at XP to begin with are now telling me XP is the cat's meow. The only reason I thought Me was for me (!) is that I heard 2000 didn't have USB support, and XP wasn't out yet when I bought this P4 last January. Now I'm wishing I'd just waited for XP. Me won't even run some of the software I'd like to use (like Avid). I hear you have to buy a fresh copy of XP for each computer though, as it has some sort of license-checking thing going on. So, one to a customer.

    2000 does indeed support USB.

    Sundowner --
Either I'm remembering it wrong, or 2000 didn't always support USB ports. There was SOMETHING it didn't support, I do know that. I would have imagined it supported them by now anyway, since they've become a necessary part of PC systems. I hear that while NT, 2000, and XP are all "NT-based," Me is not. It's more a descendant of 95/98, apparently. In any case, I'm told the best way to install XP, while upgrading will work, is to backup my apps and re-format my drive with a fresh full install. That's not something I want to do if I can avoid it. Meaning I'll be trying to upgrade, at some point, probably. I hear college kids can get XP for 5 bucks. I'm bummed.
