Question for Pabooger??

For once,I am being serious.Why does Pa.have such a large deer population?I know it is a large state in area but it also has a large population compared to Maine.I am told that it also has a large amount of hunters.You probably have more road kill annually than we have for a total deer population.It doesn't make sense to me.Two years ago a buddy went to Pa. to hunt.Came back in a week with 3 deer.Said it was common to see 10 or 12 at a time.Not so here.WHY???
It's got to be more than all those slob hunters missing so many.

I think one thing that has to do with it, is the vast majority of the state is forest, theres not a whole lot of big cities in Pa. Another issue is up until a few years ago we had no natural predators, that is now changing the coyotes are becoming ever more present.
Also I think alot of it has to do with the way the game commision has managed the deer herd. They have made alot of changes in the last few years some good some not so good.
My father before he passed away can remember when there weren't hardly any deer in Pa. as I was growing up I can remember seeing as many as 30 in various groups. Now you are lucky if you see thirty all season long.
Deer population tends to vary quite a bit from county to county. alot of the land around here has been bought by some of the large paper companies, who hate the deer. They have opened there land to hunting and encourage hunters to help bring down the large deer population.

Thanks for the reply.I will check the link.I have always heard and even read about the large deer herd in Pa.Our herd is coming back from a Real low about 10 years ago.It is still not as good as the Fish & Game Dept. would like us all to believe.license sales have dropped in recent years and they are overstating to increase them.

Yeah I know what you mean I have seen a decrease of hunters around here also. Especially the kids rarely do you see the kids out hunting after school. Man when I turned 16 I was out everday after school!
I think they are doing all there hunting on the Play stations.

I think you are right about that.When i was young(long time ago)I always seemed to get sick on opening day.Couldn't go to school.

The more i here about Pa., the better it sounds.May consider moving.
About the Pa. deer.My buddy gave me some steaks on his return.I don't know what you feed them,but i have never had better tasting venison.He also gave me some that his host in Pa.had canned and sent back with him.I personally didn't care for that but i guess it is real popular there.That steak fried med. in grease was delicious.It must be the feed or maybe the road film collected on the trip home.

I really don't care for the canned deer meat either but most do.
I sear my vennison for one minute on each side in a pan just lightly covered with olive oil, then I add a clove or two of garlic, and a cup or two of red wine, turn down the flame to simmer, cook for a few minutes and it melts in your mouth!
